Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

Well, this isn't something anyone said, but what I saw at the store the other day, along the lines of vegetarian eggs. I was, for the first time in a long time, shopping for a whole chicken. We don't have much selection to choose from so there were only about 6 birds on display from 2 different companies. One of them was claiming "all natural" "no hormones ever" and "fed a vegetarian diet." I started laughing in the middle of the store and could hardly breathe to tell my DD what was so funny. Um, vegetarians don't eat chicken and most meat eaters don't give a crap if their meat eats meat. A vegetarian diet is hardly "natural" for a chicken. You could see the lightbulb in her head go off and several people around me stopped to watch the conversation as I was saying how I felt sorry for those chickens since they aren't vegetarians by nature. Hopefully a few of those people went home to think about it.

ETA: BTW, storebought chicken still sucks and you pay for half the weight in water. Can't wait to try my hand at some Freedom Rangers next year!

This is why you can't trust labeling or advertising. They just say stuff that they think will appeal to the vast majority of inattentive shoppers. It seems to be working for them, too.

Kudos to you for being on your toes!!

I have to add to this thread...and while it may not be a dumb comment, it is the most common thing people say when they meet my chickens.

I guess, to me, keeping chickens has just become second nature, I don't think anything of it, but I forget that there are TONS of people that have never even been close to a live chicken before...let alone have their first up close and personal chicken encounter be at my house with a chicken on their lap.

We've got 2 BO hens and they were hand raised in the house until 10 weeks, because they were my first chickens that I raised from day old babies, they got spoiled...spoiled to the point that if you sit down on my back porch, you are 100% definitely going to have at least 1 of the 2 hens hop in your lap for cuddles.

First off, an old friend came into town for a visit so she came over to see the house, meet the chickens, drink wine etc. She met the chicks that were in the tub in my craft room, had no problems with them...picked them up, cuddled them, told me they were the cutest things ever.

We went out on the back porch to sit and the 2 BOs came running at us...she freaked out, tensed up and seemed to think that these hens were coming to kill her!

I told her that it was alright, that they just wanted to say hi, and then they'd be on their way.

She sat down and both chickens immediately started casing her and the chair, trying to figure out the best way onto her lap, and hopefully into meal worms [at least I assumed that this is what they were thinking.]

Once the hen was up there, she started petting her, and this look of pure wonder crossed her face...she turned to me and said "OMG. I can't believe how SOFT she is!!!"

I thought it was the funniest thing I'd ever heard, it's a chicken....covered in feathers! Of course she's soft! I didn't ask, but I always wondered what she thought the chicken was going to feel like.

But anyway, the most common thing I hear out of adults mouths are "Ohhhh, it's so soft!"
Which I find odd, because I've NEVER had a kid pet my chicken and say anything like that...it's like kids know chickens are soft, but somewhere between childhood and adulthood, they forget.

I get that a lot. :) I wouldn't have imagined they could be so soft either.

If you've ever pet other birds, like parrots for example, their feathers just aren't as plush as a chickens. It really is surprising the first time you pet a chicken and realize how pillowy and silky their feathers are. I was even surprised by our second generation of birds compared to our first--our white hens and our red production have the softest feathers I've ever felt, whereas chickens like our black and red sexlink weren't as silky.

I had a cockatoo, and he was probably softer than my chickens :) But I see what you're saying.

My english orps are much softer than my BOs...the English Orps are like little fluffy pillows.

I think their good health shows through their feathers. Sounds like you are doing something right :thumbsup

Yeah, 15$ worth of meal worms weekly!

That's more than chicken feed!

Oh, no, they get feed, corn and oyster shell too.

They are just crazy about the mealworms! Oh, and bread, and corn, and porkchops....but the meal worms are the only way for me to get them into the coop at night...they've started refusing to coop themselves unless I've got a broom in one hand and mealworms in the other. lol

Yeah, maybe I do spoil them too much. ha ha ha
