Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

My wife was against getting chickens. I said just wait until we start getting fresh eggs. She said " what color will the eggs be." I say brown. "Well I am not eating brown eggs". I told her I will cook up a store egg and one of my eggs and she can decide which tastes better. There is still hope for her.

My husband is the same way...He says he doesn't want to eat eggs that come from the chickens....upon which I ask him where he thinks store eggs come from...he says he knows, but that he prefers the store eggs...to which I answer that I am not buying anymore eggs, and if he has eggs they will be eggs that I got from the chickens.

I have to add to this thread...and while it may not be a dumb comment, it is the most common thing people say when they meet my chickens.

I guess, to me, keeping chickens has just become second nature, I don't think anything of it, but I forget that there are TONS of people that have never even been close to a live chicken before...let alone have their first up close and personal chicken encounter be at my house with a chicken on their lap.

We've got 2 BO hens and they were hand raised in the house until 10 weeks, because they were my first chickens that I raised from day old babies, they got spoiled...spoiled to the point that if you sit down on my back porch, you are 100% definitely going to have at least 1 of the 2 hens hop in your lap for cuddles.

First off, an old friend came into town for a visit so she came over to see the house, meet the chickens, drink wine etc. She met the chicks that were in the tub in my craft room, had no problems with them...picked them up, cuddled them, told me they were the cutest things ever.

We went out on the back porch to sit and the 2 BOs came running at us...she freaked out, tensed up and seemed to think that these hens were coming to kill her!

I told her that it was alright, that they just wanted to say hi, and then they'd be on their way.

She sat down and both chickens immediately started casing her and the chair, trying to figure out the best way onto her lap, and hopefully into meal worms [at least I assumed that this is what they were thinking.]

Once the hen was up there, she started petting her, and this look of pure wonder crossed her face...she turned to me and said "OMG. I can't believe how SOFT she is!!!"

I thought it was the funniest thing I'd ever heard, it's a chicken....covered in feathers! Of course she's soft! I didn't ask, but I always wondered what she thought the chicken was going to feel like.

But anyway, the most common thing I hear out of adults mouths are "Ohhhh, it's so soft!"
Which I find odd, because I've NEVER had a kid pet my chicken and say anything like that...it's like kids know chickens are soft, but somewhere between childhood and adulthood, they forget.
I guess they didn't know pillow and some mattresses used to be stuffed with feathers. ever hear of people in old songs and movies talk about feather beds or hear people talk about down feather pillows????

I have a friend who won't eat brown eggs....Store bought or otherwise...oh well, no free, delicious, fresh chicken eggs for her.

In what world are home grown chicken eggs free? :th

Mine cost me a pretty penny, that's for sure!

Well, they would have been free for her as we believe in sharing what we have too much of rather than letting it go to waste.

Pshhaww. My parents pay me $5 a dozen.

Anyone who wants eggs will help cover cost of feed. My dad pays me $5 because he can afford it. Who am I to deny him the satisfaction of helping his little girl :plbb

I always tell friends they can work off the cost of eggs - by helping with chores LOL.

It's a lot of work caring for as many birds as I have, and it's not cheap. Anyone who wants free eggs is not someone I care to be friends with.

I can't squeeze enough eggs out of my one laying chicken to really be useful at all...

I bought 3 adult hens and 1 rooster to start off with...but only one hen is laying...one is older and one is younger and one is in the middle...Middlet lays almost everyday...the others not at all...
So I got a hen and her 7 chicks...I can already tell that at least 2 of the chicks are roosters...I need a new one though...
The rooster I bought is old...Which makes him very calm and docile, but I was looking for a more guarded rooster that would help protect the flock...I mean I want it to not attack me, but jeez I would like to see him get puffed up at something...he is huge, but has no fight in him. He made it very easy to introduce the new chickens though...no issues at all...except the youngest hen out of the original 4...but she is the lowest in the pecking order of the 4, so I guess she doesn't want to lose her place as 4th, but she even gets punked by the new chicks...lol. She'll stretch out her neck and puff up and run at one, but they stretch and puff back so she runs away from a bird that is easily a quarter of her size...silly scaredy chicken.

Does anyone have an idea of how many chickens I would need to actually get a good amount of eggs? 40? Is 40 a good number?

we have 21 hens, about 16 of which are presently laying, and we get about a dozen a day in the nice weather, about 9 a day right now. It depends a lot on the varieties you get and how much light they have.
