alyscr1913 we have idiots who don't research at all buy homes in our county and complain about the noise from a 100+ year old race track a 80+ year old airport noise and traffic. Also they complain they have bought property and built a home in an area the state will put an interstate through when the state has been vocal about the plans for almost 20 years, because the seller never volunteered the information and they never asked it's everyone's fault not theirs. Also I had a co-worker who got pregnant while on birth control, and she blamed the hospital because the never told her that anti-biotic meds could make her birth control ineffective, I asked her if they asked if she was asked if she was on any meds, she said she told them no, I asked what she thought the pill was then? she told me I was mean! Mean? you get a prescription from a MD take it to a pharmacy they give you a container of pills and a hand full of papers telling you all the side effects and how to take it and it's not a med.? and I am mean because even if it's not perhaps if it where me I'd tell them just in case it might be relevant in what pills they give me or that there may be something wrong with me because of me taking it and not a virus????

Didn't you know? Stepping out of your comfort zone and inconveniencing yourself, and not being able to blame it on everyone but yourself, is NOT the American way! Look at all the people who are blaming fast food for their waistlines. I know that sugar is to blame for my waistline, but I'm to blame for letting the sugar get in my mouth, in the first place.

I just tell those that ask the turken were breed special so city folks know where to chop.

Don't worry I am a fairly strait forward (logical) person and I get called mean all the time for it. I had one friend of my husbands and mine call him crying because I told her that she had to apply for jobs to get one. I haven't spoken to her since but her ignorance gave me migraines anyways. She was very dumb, I don't usually hold that against people who have a reason for it but when they internationally don't try to do better and I know they can do better because I have seen them do better but they are too lazy, I get annoyed.

I have been sick for the past two days with food poisoning and I had a friend as me if I was sure it was not caused by the chickens. Past the fact that I am way over cautious with them already and wash my hands every time I touch them. (mainly it is because I was carrying them outside and they always cut my hands when I do) Getting sick from a well chicken is not something I expect to happen. I really have not heard about someone getting food poisoning from being around chickens.

I've had that happen too! I got the flu, and the first thing a friend asked me: "Do you think you caught something from your chickens?" Or I've even heard, "Do you think you have avian flu?" When I tell them no, they argue with me. Ok, my children and I both know that it's smart to wash your hands after handling your chickens. It's also smart to wash your hands after using the restroom, and we do that as well. And unless I go out and lick my chickens... yeah. I'm not licking my chickens, and I'm not saving their dander to snort in my recreational time. I think we're safe.

Along those same lines... My parents were down this weekend to watch our little ones so we could try and get some much needed work done around the house. She was out walking her dog and followed me down to the coop where I currently have my guineas. I stepped in, filled up their water, and came out. (She wouldn't go near it, said she would look at them later). When I turned around she had her hand over her mouth and said "Honey, I really wish you would wear a mask or something when you go in there, especially now that you're pregnant. I worry you're going to get sick or something." I told her "Mom, it's fine! I just cleaned out the coop a couple weeks ago (with a mask) and it's not like they are ever in there except to sleep. Plus, there's not much that's going to transfer from them to me." "Well, what about that cocci-whatever." (I had a scare with it a couple weeks ago... most likely not the case though) "No, I can't catch that from them." "Really?" "Really"

And I am very careful to wash hands after handling them or eggs or anything. I leave my shoes on the porch, etc.

The funny thing is, my mom was raised on a farm! I don't think they had chickens, but at one point I know she had a pet raccoon! You would never know it today though, she is so "city" it's embarrassing at times.

Just a reality check...I was in intensive care for 3 weeks, have brain damage and will suffer from Dismented Histoplamosis for the rest of my life after contracting it from my Turkeys in 2005. I love my birds and all my animals, but I have a new found respect for washing my hands and not breathing in as much as I can when i am handling them or cleaning pens etc. I ran a fever over 106 for 5 days, liver shut down, kidneys shut down and they said I would die.......do not ever think you cant catch something!

On fairness, they moved in before chickens....however, they have 4 acres with 21 cows on it that were not there when I moved here 10 years before them. I am a live & let live guy, but don't complain about my farm when you have a feed lot haha (btw, i have 15 acres LOL) I had to stop raising birds due to an illness...im over that and back at it.....just puzzles me that someone steeped in AG would complain when my place is clean and theres is knee deep crap with no grass haha

I really appreciate your being fair and honest about who got there first, the chickens or the nimwad. But, with a better picture of the situation, I definitely think he's a nimwad.

You said he objected to having a "chicken farmer" next door to him, so maybe it's YOU and not the chickens he minds.

At least he doesn't have a nimwad for a neighbor.

I should clarify that his wife made that comment, he doesn't have the stones to confront me on anything. I am about the most neighborly person you would ever want, just don't step on me and expect a cowering individual in return. I was raised on a farm, went to school with cow **** on my boots but I do understand when a new neighbor arrives and adds livestock it can be a shock to many. If its done right, usually no issues, when its handled wrong, enemies for life.

My other neighbors (all 1/4 mile away) usually can be found at the fences petting our goats or offering them a treat. One even asked if I could train my Turkeys to come to his house every day haha!

Don't you know that if you don't gush with sympathy every time some idiot suffers the consequences of their own irresponsible actions, you're "mean"?? You ole meanie, you.

People have abused that word so much lately that my standard response now is: "No, If I stuck my foot out to make you fall down the stairs and then laughed when you got hurt, I'd be mean. I'm just being logical. What you meant to say is that the truth hurts."
