Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

I've offered eggs to one friend and she asked what they ate. I told her and she shuddered and said no no no she wont eat any eggs if the chickens could have possibly eaten a bugs and things.

My co-workers find it gross and disgusting that I eat my chickens eggs.  But can't understand why I dont just kill them for the meat instead.

Who ARE these people? I've read so many stories of friends/relatives/co-workers, etc, claiming they are grossed out by backyard eggs and won't eat them. Why? I honestly don't get it.
You'd rather eat a 6 week old egg from a chicken that has been in a 2'x2' cage all her life, with 12 other hens, all of whom have had half their beak cut off so they can't kill each other from the stress, who can NOT eat a normal diet, who can NOT do any of the things they were meant to do, and who live in squalor until they are killed at a year old and made into fertilizer or low end dog food!?!?
Thankfully I've never encountered this kind of ignorance. Everyone I've met who knows I gave chickens chomps at the bit to get even half a dozen of my eggs. Several of my apartment dweller peeps have even gone so far as to declare they are getting their own flock one day.
These hyper-ignorant attitudes are just so, well, IGNORANT!
Makes me grumpy...

I feel bad for breeds like Dobermans and Pit Bulls for having their bad rep. Just like asking people about chickens, you just never know what someone believes, and even when shown proof that their belief is untrue, they still believe it!

Not so much with dobies, but your typical large, "aggressive", dog breed owner (I.e. pits, rotties, etc) is not usually the most responsible of dog owners, which is why I believe they have the bad rep. These breeds were created for guarding, protection, gameness for fighting and are VERY strong. They are also strong willed dogs who have a bred in aggressive tendency, if your dog is guarding something, he's not supposed to go up to the intruder and say "Hi, my name is Rover! The silver is this way". Its just their nature. Thus they need a very firm hand and LOTS of training to ensure their behavior will not get out of control because they can and do become dangerous.
Speaking from having had an Am. Staff (smaller pit bull) who we adopted from a stupid teenage boy who did not train him, did not neuter him, and (surprise surprise!) could not control him, I hate to say it but the reputation is there because of irresponsible ownership.
People who do not train these breeds properly are ASKING for trouble. And lets face it, who "usually" owns these breeds? Young males age 16-25 who want a "tough dog", and who have the "if I keep my balls, he keeps his" attitude. BAD BAD BAD IDEA!
Ugh....

To make a long comment short, the "dangerous breeds" may be inherently more aggressive than other breeds because we made them that way. But it's the irresponsible owners that are the real problem, not the dogs. With proper training, any dog can be good.

Agreed.

I think some people want a dog as a protector then go get the scariest dog they can think if. But then they are too afraid of the dog to adequately train it and the dog becomes the alpha dog in the pack. Cant tell you the number of times (but I'd have to take my shoes off to count) that an owner cannot control their dog because the dog does not respect the owner.

I vividly remember an owner of a very difficult Malamute (had to double muzzle him for an exam) that we found in the parking lot by her car 20 minutes after her vet appointment. Why was she standing there? The dog didn't want to get into the car and she couldn't 'make' it. She had been warned the dog was showing dominant behavior as a puppy and she needed to train it. They never listen.

Yesterday I lost a few birds by a thief. They broke in my yard and stole my 3 adult turkeys, my only leghorn rooster and a bunch of EE's chicks and one black copper marans young rooster. They didnt touch my breeders pen in there I have black copper marans, in the others pens I have ee's and ameraucanas. One of the ameraucanas is a blue wheaten rooster from peachick. Only one i hatched from her expensive eggs. None of the ameraucanas are at point of lay. For me to get those birds was a really dificcult thing. So I am glad they are ok. Well, my mom heard something and told my dad that someone was at my yard. My dad is with a cold so he told her that probably they were my friends and he didnt even got of the couch. My mom continued doing her shores and forgot the incident. When I got home late at night I found my birds missing..
Today I call my father to ask him something and told him I was getting a security system. And here come the funny part....he told I did not need it because the thiefs are not going to return. They just wanted the turkeys and they got them.
Dad,and what about the other birds they took?
Those were only extras they took as they passed. naaaahhhh, they are not coming for more.

Nope....i believe they saw everything and are coming for them all. So I took in some of my ameraucanas and just got the camara system and key locks for all the coop's doors. Need to install them all. And i'm sure my dad will tell me I'm exagerating.

I'm sorry that happened to you. I'm building my coop and almost done with it. When I am outside building it sometimes I fear that someone is gonna try to steal my chickens when I do get them. The people around where I live aren't exactly so trust worthy so it worries me sometimes too.

Wow. I guess I'm showing my ignorance here. I know factory farms are horrible, but do they really give each chicken less than a foot of space like that? that's insane! Who thought of this? I've got to google it.

You mean human thieves stole your birds? I am really not prepared for that... Why would someone do that?!

Quote: Way back in the early 1900's, there were quite a few deaths from Salmonella. The Government started a propaganda program and blamed small egg producers. There were a lot of them back then, with a couple hundred or so in the flock. The problem was actually with the commercial producers at that time, but the propaganda pretty much ended small egg producers.

We see that now with vegetable oil and Soy products. It is amazing to find out that Crisco is actually bad for your and Butter is better than Margarine. Those two were from companies selling the products. Crisco was a bit from the government.

Today we are seeing the damage caused by switching Americans 10% from oils to carbs for our diet. Really? Carbs are supposed to be at the bottom of the food pyramid as our main source of calories?

Ask them if they ever eat crab. Then tell them to google what crabs eat.

yes...human thieves. And seems it was a woman and 2 men. I think I saw the woman a few days back "showing my turkeys" to her kids. When I got home and found her at my fence with her kids I chatted a bit with her but found her odd. 2 days later my turkeys were stolen and some of my chickens. It's easier to protect your flock from animal predators than human ones but i'm tying my best.

Thank you. I always thought it was a possibility. But a small one. So I always talked about security cameras but never did anything about it. Now I was forced to do it in less that 2 days and had to install it myself to make it quick. And put locks in all the big pens. I still dont feel confident .
