If you get a chance, ask her if she has even ever seen a rotten egg. And if she did, what color was it?

I've offered eggs to one friend and she asked what they ate. I told her and she shuddered and said no no no she wont eat any eggs if the chickens could have possibly eaten a bugs and things.

My co-workers find it gross and disgusting that I eat my chickens eggs. But can't understand why I dont just kill them for the meat instead.

My vegetarian daughter witnessed one of chickens gleefully snacking on squeaking pinkies when we disturbed a mouse nest cleaning out the hen house. It put her off this hen's eggs for the rest of the Summer. Too much of a visual. She was 9. You'd think folks would grow out of that sort of thing!

You should tell them how many bug parts are allowable in cereal or rodent filth/bug parts in flour or best yet rat hairs and poop in peanut butter. At least the bugs have been pre-digested when they go through the chicken!

Here's an example of max allownaces from the FDAhttp://www.fda.gov/food/guidancecomplianceregulatoryinformation/guidancedocuments/sanitation/ucm056174.htm#intro :
TOMATO PASTE, PIZZA AND OTHER SAUCES Drosophila fly
(AOAC 955.46) Average of 30 or more fly eggs per 100 grams
OR
15 or more fly eggs and 1 or more maggots per 100 grams
OR
2 or more maggots per 100 grams in a minimum of 12 subsamples

So true, somewhere there's allowances for rat hair, etc. I had a whole spider in a can of pears once. Ewwwww....

And I have had a praying mantis in a bag of organic greens. If folks only knew the conditions of the chickens that give you store bought eggs. That makes me shutter!

While visiting my father in law in WA (he lives with us now) we passed a mill that had a hill of wheat sitting outside. Birds were walking all over it so he felt the need to point out that that mound was going to be turned into flour

more info than I wanted. He also pointed out the fact that rats and any other creature that ate the stuff climbed all over it as well, hence the poop hair and whatever else that cannot be 100% removed even during all the processing and what not. We just do not think about these things, out of site out of mind. We wash everything we eat that we can yet we eat all the extra little bits of protein that we don't see and it does not kill us. Subconsciously we know these things but just do not think about them.

This is a great thread, and reading some of these posts are hilarious! It has made me realize how many ignorant stories, beliefs, and stereotypes there are for animals. Off the chicken topic, but a great example of this is my dogs. I have two Doberman Pinschers, and I have been told many times that I cannot feed them meat (raw or cooked) because it will make them aggressive, I cannot feed them raw meat because they will get the taste of blood and become aggressive and start attacking, Dobermans are horrible family dogs, they are just junkyard aggressive dogs, and (my favorite) Dobermans are not good dogs to have because when they reach a certain age their brain outgrows their skull and this causes them to go insane and become very aggressive and attack. Also something I found very interesting is one of my dog's ears are cropped, the other has natural floppy ears. When I take them out in public people shrink away from the cropped ears but run up and ask to pet the one with natural ears. I have asked a few people why that is and the response is "because that one looks like a 'Doberman', mean". People usually do not even realize that floppy ears is a Doberman, they usually ask, what kind of mutt is he. I pointed out to one lady that she is afraid of the dog just because she has upright ears, based on the logic that "all Doberman's are aggressive", this means that you should have been bitten by floppy ears, but you weren't. I feel bad for breeds like Dobermans and Pit Bulls for having their bad rep. Just like asking people about chickens, you just never know what someone believes, and even when shown proof that their belief is untrue, they still believe it!
