Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

My grandma always have hens. So when my uncle told me only could eat fried eggs I was speachless. He told me that he boils them they make him sick. He gets a cold. How you relate a boiled egg with getting a cold? got no idea.

How about in baked goods, like cookies; that give him strep throat?

I was talking to one of my friends from back home in london yesterday and got around to discussing my passion for chickens and ducks, she asked me 'so how do you eat a fresh chickens egg?'
when i asked her what she meant she said ' well can you eat it straight away or do you have to let it mature for a few days?'
*face palm moment!*
I also spent a painful hour explaining to my uncle (who grew up with chickens and ducks) the difference between fertilised and unfertilised eggs and how an egg becomes fertilised.....................there is no cure for stupidity!
'so how does the chick get inside the egg then?'
duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

I haven't gotten any meat chickens yet, but my mother and aunt just can not understand how I could raise a chicken only to "murder a poor trusting, defenseless chicken". Keep in mind they have no problem going to the store and eating the chicken from there because "It doesn't have a name and they don't have to look at its face". My mother has even told my DD that "It's sad your mother wants to murder chickens. Won't that make you sad when she kills the chickens?".

It drives me crazy!!

Did I post this? Wow, that sounds like some conversations I've had with my mother and aunt...and I live in NH as well!

1. From my friend "Store eggs are safer because they are pasteurized" (um...no they are not)

2. From my sister who is vegan "Eating eggs is cruel!" (in what way?? so should all those eggs that these happy hens lay just be tossed? I don't even remotely understand that one!)

3. From my brother-in-law (different sister) "We don't eat white eggs because those have been bleached...we try to avoid chemically processed foods" (took a LONG time to get him to understand that different breeds lay different colored eggs)

4. From same brother-in-law "The really big eggs we avoid too since they were made using artificial growth hormones" (same long conversation about different breeds)

Who started the thought process that brown eggs were "better" than white? I've always wondered why so many people think that. I know I get brown egg layers just b/c it's fun to see the different shades (getting a couple EEs this year for the kids), but not b/c I think they are "better" than white. One time last year the 6 eggs I collected for the day were a lovely color graduation from light to dark. It was pretty neat!

There used to be a local restaurant that had a sign that read "Brown eggs are local eggs and local eggs are fresh!" Perhaps there was some truth in that...depending on what breeds local farmers were raising.

ETA for typo

A little bit off topic here but... what on earth is wrong with eating a horse? They are well cared for and get probably the best feeds and grains then when the owners can't afford to feed them anymore for any number of reasons, nobody will buy a horse because they can't afford to feed it either and now there is a law that says you can't send a horse to the butcher to be used as feed... not even for pet food (if I remember correctly) because they are PETS and they're INTELLIGENT and they are partners and friends to us humans! That is just insane! Is it more humane to let the poor things starve to death? What a ridiculous mind set people have nowadays! I guarantee you, if I still had my horse (as lovely as she was) if my family was hungry, I GUARANTEE she would go to the icebox! When I bought food for her, the store would ask if its for edible livestock. I always answered yes!

It doesn't make any sense to me, either. Many (a lot more than people think!) of the so-called "wild" horses out here in Nevada would be more properly called "feral" horses since they are animals their owners could no longer afford to take care of and couldn't sell so they just turned them loose! I heard from someone who is in the know that there are no longer any pure strains of real wild mustangs left on the range. And, since they aren't native to North America anyway, and have no natural predators, they overpopulate to the point where they degrade the range and begin starving, not to mention the fact that they compete with actual wildlife like deer and antelope.

O my gosh! People are so dumb! I have chcikens and I'm 13 so I went o my (not anymore)Best Friends(chey) house for her party and we were in the pool and this girl shows chickens, so when she was drying off her little brother came along and we were playing a guessing game. Chey is clueless about chickens and fo a polish chicken, she calls it a squinty eyed chicken
he.gif
. Anyways, We did chicken breeds and she went under water and we picked Silkies, she came up and she gave up. So the little boy goes, "remember chey, the ones with the poof on their head." she acts like she remembers but she is a total show off. So I said that could also be polish chickens. Mind you I have had 30+ chickens and can name their breeds. So after i said the polish breed thing, she says Dale has had like four chickens and he thinks he knows everything. I said what makes you think that even you know more than me. she says well I have spent longer time than you have with people than you have. she has never had chickens.

I mean it really hurt my feelings! I guess there is always one bad egg out in the bunch.

I wouldnt let people like that hurt your feelings, she obviously didnt want to appear stupid in front of your other friends (probably felt really dumb too!) many people will 'front' when they dont know what they are actually doing. My son who is almost 9 gets alot of hassle because he spends so much time with animals and not alot of time with people, he says he prefers animals to people because animals dont fib! (how right is he!) Just rest assured that you are a smart girl who knows a whole lot about animals :D
