I can imagine the twisted path the conversation might have taken discussing bodies of water on a car trip. It already had gone from where lakes come from to how a body of water becomes a salty sea or a fresh water lake....I would not want to have to concentrate on driving and try to keep up with all that!

Off to dream about chickens...

O my gosh! People are so dumb! I have chcikens and I'm 13 so I went o my (not anymore)Best Friends(chey) house for her party and we were in the pool and this girl shows chickens, so when she was drying off her little brother came along and we were playing a guessing game. Chey is clueless about chickens and fo a polish chicken, she calls it a squinty eyed chicken

. Anyways, We did chicken breeds and she went under water and we picked Silkies, she came up and she gave up. So the little boy goes, "remember chey, the ones with the poof on their head." she acts like she remembers but she is a total show off. So I said that could also be polish chickens. Mind you I have had 30+ chickens and can name their breeds. So after i said the polish breed thing, she says Dale has had like four chickens and he thinks he knows everything. I said what makes you think that even you know more than me. she says well I have spent longer time than you have with people than you have. she has never had chickens.

I mean it really hurt my feelings! I guess there is always one bad egg out in the bunch.

Something for you to consider. Most kids your age don't have responsibilities like you do. You have 30 chickens who count on you to take care of them and that is making you grow up a little faster then your friends. So for a while you will notice them saying some immature things that may be hurtful, they are not always meant to be. Sometime they are just trying to not look stupid like this girl was, she probably didn't even think before she spoke. Now sometimes they grow out of it, sometimes they don't. One of the things that was hard for me to grasp growing up was that there are people out there who are as immature as they were in middle school, and more of them then you would think. For the most part Middle School is one of the more immature times in adolescence so you might have to grin and bare it a little longer. I say give this girl some time, but if there is a point later that she seams a little more grounded you might try your friendship again. If she was your best friend there was a reason for that. Worst case most people have that one stupid friend, just don't trust her with anything important. Good luck the next year or two will be difficult, but remember that it was for most of us and will be for most the other kids.

RE: So you perpetuate ignorance?

It goes without saying that it depends on the individual and the situation, but when someone is being arrogant and authoritative while spouting nonsense (instead of asking an innocent question), yes, I perpetuate their ignorance. Who am I to burst their bubble? As with the example of the OP who said the lady thought incubating eggs was cruel because the chicks won't have a mama, these people aren't going to be convinced otherwise, so why waste your breath?

As for lakes in the Blue Ridge, until I moved here I never knew they were all man made, either. But, I never suspected they would be anything BUT fresh water! I used this as an example of not thinking things through. When she asked if the lakes were fresh water, I was stunned. I mean, salt water lakes in the inland Blue Ridge Mountains where the rivers and streams are spring or rain fed?? wow

I'll back up and say, when people *tell* me that everybody knows I need roosters to get eggs, I respond, "Oh. Really." and move on, perpetuating their ignorance ... until my hens lay and they come looking for eggs.

Thanks, Ron. It seems I made myself somewhat clear..

How many people had pet rocks in the 1970's?

I still have my pet rock! He has made several moves around the country with me, never had a sick day in his life and is alive and thriving at approximately 33 years of age! Does anyone know what their lifespan is?????

And none of my Silkie hens are laying yet...the oldest is 2 months...maybe I need a rooster.

HERE'S ANOTHER THING PEOPLE ALWAYS SAY TO ME: "Are you gonna eat them???" and I always say that their my only pets and I love them and some people make fun of me because I have pet chickens and they think it's weird... But some GREAT friends tell me that it's cool to have a chicken and they think that it's an awesome idea. The people that are bullying me about them have NO lives and are WANNABEES and will probably go know here in life because they make fun of other people for the things they do look and have. I love my chickens and will never stop loving them, and I don't care what people say because chickens are THE best pets a man can have :D

Right you are! I doubt you'll find anyone here who will disagee with, much less bully, you about your chickens, Next time they hassle you about it, show them this YouTube about commercial egg production, and ask them what *they're* doing to counteract it. YOU are raising your own chickens for eggs so you won't support this filth and cruelty..In the meantime, you're also eating cleaner, healthier, better tasting eggs. Until they can make the same claim, they need to back off.
