Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

To loveourbirds.....I didn't take your words to be mean, negative, or anything like that at all...You spoke bluntly and truthfully from the heart...That earns my respect totally....Ever since the Industrial Revolution began humans have been agonizing over the best balance between what we give to the community and what we reserve for ourselves. Before modern, anonymous social arrangements developed we were forced by tradition and necessity to live interconnected lives with our family and immediate community....We no longer "know" everyone we interact with and, consequently, feel less obligated to consider their interests as our own....William Wordsworth said it well: "Getting and spending we lay waste our powers."....God Bless and keep up the good life....
im glad I didn't offend you, I was worried I had. I agree totally with what you are saying.

to the rest of you:
I know my beliefs are a little weird and eccentric. I never mean to offend anyone, if I do or ever have offended you - I apologize. my grandpa was a pretty wise man, he always said that "blood is thicker than water" and I feel that's the way it should be. I have friends that I consider family, and I have family I refuse to talk to because of the way they act. people who know me locally will tell you that I do what I can to help out. my chicken business makes very little money because I donate so much to kids for learning and families for eating. of course money doesn't mean that much to me, we have enough to get through a few years. but all the money in the world is worthless unless you use it for the right reasons. I could have just as easily spent it on pills or cocaine, I don't drink, I do smoke cigarettes unfortunately.

im sure by this point someone is saying "that man is crazy" and your probably right!

I am one of those folks who my friends describe as being helpful and always there. I will help anyone in any way I am able. But I am also one who says "screw me over once shame on you, screw me over twice shame on me". I don't tolerate being used or looked down on because of where I live and/ or how I choose to live. I am a country gal yes but I do have two college degrees and a paramedic license and my CNA certification. I'm not stupid or simple, I just prefer a simpler, more self sufficient way of life. And none of us who feel that way should ever apologize for that !

We had my niece's birthday party at my house yesterday. The chickens were very curious and were under foot all day. Quite a few of the guests kept asking about the turkeys. They were referring to my Hamburg girls. I don't think they look like turkeys at all, but one woman went so far as to tell me that somebody gave me the wrong birds. Oh well.

I have to agree with a lot of what's being said on this thread. I can't believe how far removed from our food we are as a culture. And, loveourbirds, I would be in heaven if I could have a little community in the middle of nowhere like the one you described. For now I have to settle for what I have, which is pretty close. Everyone congregates at my house. I don't have acres but I've got a pretty big spot for a place in the city. Everyone who comes joins in the work to take care of the animals and the gardens and the children. We work together and play together and reap the rewards of both together.

I guess my point is if we can be creative we can help teach the next generation the difference between chickens and turkeys. Happy Monday everyone!

Nope, I consider you completely normal, and wish more people were like you. As you said, folks in cities and crowds' IQ lowers when put in groups, because they do "groupspeak". I was disturbed with a report I saw on Fox News Channel yesterday... college graduates today can't get jobs because human resource departments in private industry won't hire them, because they can't spell, they have very low reading comprehension, can't do basic math, poor communication skills. They have been deliberately dumbed down by our education system, so that they become lemmings... controlled by the elites. Yet, they are expected to help with Obamacare, and buy insurance at the higher premiums so that the older folks that need more health care, and more costs and expenses, as a result, can have it, and be subsidized by those who don't need it (the college graduates who can't get jobs, and can't afford to buy it!). So, what happens when no one is buying health insurance, because they can't afford it, or don't feel they need it? If they can't afford it, then what makes the federal government think they can afford to pay the fines and taxes/penalties, let alone their student loan debts? This is a no-win situation.

My husband and I feel the same way you do... would love to buy several hundred acres of land, and build an underground home in the middle of it... the earth, if dug down low enough, below the freeze line, would maintain an ambient temperature so that heating/air conditioning wouldn't be needed, and no one would know that we were there... more acreage to be utilized for growing/pasture land for livestock, etc. Would also provide protection from the elements, such as storms, tornadoes, etc. Where we live, earthquakes are a rarity, so a minor concern (however, I do expect that the New Madrid and Yellowstone are going to become active again, very soon).

I was born and raised a Catholic, but always had problems reconciling the teachings of that denomination. I was never taught the importance of having a relationship with Jesus Christ while being indoctrinated in that denomination. So, I strayed from the church at the age of 9. It took an event at the age of 42 for me to have a relationship with Him, and I have never regretted the decision. I'm now a non-denominational Evangelical Christian... don't align with any denominational organization. However, it wasn't the church that made me believe that we help our neighbors, not to be racist, etc. It was my parents' raising me and instilling in me their values. They were both raised on farmsteads (my mother, here in North Dakota, which is why I am here, having returned to her roots... I was born and raised in the San Francisco bay area... talk about big city mentality). My mother always called me her city girl, with a HUGE country heart. Part of that is because I spent my childhood summers with her parents, on their 600-acre farm here in North Dakota, and they influenced me, as well. I was, at one point, because of my parents, considered a Democrat, but came to realize that their agenda was WAY too liberal for my tastes, but the Republican agenda didn't align with me, either. So, I am considered an Independent, and that satisfies me just fine. It means that I have a mind of my own and can make my own decisions. I consider anyone, politically, or work-wise, for that matter, as being the best qualified, regardless of gender, color of skin, political-leanings, religion, whatever. Who will get the job done?

Ok, I'm done... jumping off my soapbox, and let's bring back the topic of our thread! LOL!

I have 2 ameraucana hens. My coworkers did not believe that they laid blue/green eggs. I took them to work to show them, cooked some and shared them. some coworkers walked away in disbelief, some tried them. Most turned up their noses and still did not believe that they were from chickens!

I have met so many people that didn't know chickens could lay any other colors other than brown and white! Most are excited about it, and want some though, never had anybody not believe me.

I once argued with a woman for 20 minutes about whether or not you need a rooster to get baby chicks. Not eggs, actual chicks. I guess she thought they cloned themselves? Or they were immaculate chicks?

i got ameracaunas or ees for my daughter and father because, the ladies my mom sells too dont want any but the darkest brown.. so the colored eggs are MINE.. i still am in disbelief that one lady looks through all the eggs and only takes the darkest browns.. makes me think.. hmm get marans call them heritage + label them 25 cents higher = profit from stupidity
