you know, it does go a lot farther than chickens and what we think we are eating; all of us are guilty to some extent. my brother is in the septic business, he and I were talking about how often you should have your tank pumped. 20 years ago, the standard was 5-7 years between pumpings; now its about every 2 years. I asked him if its because we are more full of pooh now. he laughed and gave me a much better answer. 20 years ago we used bleach to sanitize everything. bleach dies quickly when disinfecting organics. now we are all so afraid of getting sick that we use antibacterial everything - all of this goes into our septic systems and kills the needed bacteria that digests the solids.

what happened to the day when we got sick, got over it and built an immunity? also, what happened to the day when we knew what we were eating, and could pronounce everything on the menu?

Totally True!

A dear friend of mine just found out that I have more chickens. She informed me that it's a bad idea because my kids will get scabies. I asked her of she was aware that her cat could possibly contract HIV. She suddenly stopped her sermon and ended our conversation to call her vet. I felt kinda bad, but it'll probably earn me a few days of peace
As far as I know, chickens don't get scabies. If they do I have never heard of it. However, cats do get scabies. They don't get HIV though. They get FLV. It is a retrovirus like HIV but it is not the same thing. A lot of animals get retroviruses. Humans get HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) cats get FLV ( feline leukemia virus) goats get CAE (caprine arthritis encephalitis)and horses get one but I don't remember what it is called and as far as I know it is not found in this country. All of these viruses seem to be species specific. I think it is funny what you told your friend about HIV. Next time you see her you might mention cats and scabies. That ought to rattle her cage some more.

I think the closest thing to scabies a chicken can get is scaly leg mite and people can't get these. They are species specific like chicken lice/mites etc.

I've heard people say this before re: chickens can give scabies to people. FALSE!

ok, im putting my own ignorance on display. im thinking about writing an article and im fighting with a half remembered piece of information.

was it Thomas Payne (spelling) that wrote "Common Sense" and wasn't that about how food was processed?
Yes, Thomas Paine wrote "Common Sense" but I thought it was a pamplet about how Kings were bad for America and not about food. I've got it free on my Kindle but haven't read it. Here's what Amazon says "the impassioned pamphlet that helped ignite the American Revolution. Published in Philadelphia in January of 1776, Common Sense sold 150,000 copies almost immediately. A powerful piece of propaganda, it attacked the idea of a hereditary monarchy, dismissed the chance for reconciliation with England, and outlined the economic benefits of independence while espousing equality of rights among citizens." If you want to read it for your article, you can always download the Kindle for PC app and read it for yourself.

I hate the fact that my house drains ALL water into the septic...dishwasher, clothes washer, shower, etc. My parents house had only the toilet going to the septic tank and they used RidEx every month. I've cut back on the amount of detergents (and bleach) I use in my washer so that I'm not killing the good bacteria in my septic tank.

my mother, who works for the county health department told me that chickens carried lice and i shouldn't keep them for that reason. the next day she did call to correct herself - she started talking about it at work and they corrected her

. what makes it even worse, dad raised chickens and turkeys for commercial meet market for 5 years of their marriage.

does anyone know the article im talking about, an article about fingers in meat, bugs in food etc. i believe it was the article that started the USDA or maybe the FDA.

history was never my strong point.

i don't think they get used anymore, and im ashamed to admit it. we have at least 3 kindles in this house somewhere. i thought they were just electronic books, so i bought them for my kids - hoping they would read more. im technologically impared myself, I used to be all for it. even to the point of 2 technology based degrees. i use it now, but i maintain my independence from it at the same time.
