Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

We are doing an egg drop lab in science, and I am going ALL OUT!

I'm candling all the eggs to find the one that is least likely to break, how much bacteria is in the egg and how porous they are. I'm just going crazy!

And today my friend and I went over to the eggs and candled them again, and then Ellie shook one just for fun. Then she got this horrified look on her face. "I can feel it moving." She meant that she could feel the egg moving around inside the shell (as eggs certainly should not do.) We tested all of them and found four, yes four, out of 20, that I would feel comfortable eating. Half sloshed like that (GROSS!) and the other half were SOOOOO messed up (like you could see how porous and bacteria ridden they were) and had shell deformities that are linked to stress.

Then we got into this massive discussion. She asked why they sloshed, and I explained that the membrane around the air sack had broken so the egg was leaking into the air sack, allowing the egg room to move around. I'm not sure how that happened.... some were reallyyyy bad. You could literally hear and feel the albumen and yolk just slipping back in forth in the egg.

Then we got into this weird discussion about fertilized eggs. Ellie was CONVINCED that eating fertilized eggs is like chicken abortion

Then she was vastly confused about how exactly they are fertilized. For example, I think she asked if the male CHICKS (not chickens, CHICKS) have to fertilize the female CHICKS after hatching for them to live.... I didn't even know how to reply to that. And after that, I had to explain that you actually could eat fertilized eggs. Somehow I brought up that next spring I'm going to hatch some chicks, and she said : "Well you have to have a rooster to do that, right?" I said yes. "So, then all of the eggs could be baby chickens?" I told her that in normal flocks, 75% to 90% of the eggs laid by hens with roosters around are fertilized and capable of hatching baby chickens. "Okay. So, then how do you know which you can hatch and which you can eat?" I said that you just pick up the eggs laid that day, or yesterday, etc., and "set" them, or give them to a broody. Not all will hatch, because some will die during incubation and some will be infertile. "Yeah, yeah, I got that, but you obviously can't EAT the fertilized eggs, right?" I just shook my head.. and told her you can. She looked disgusted, but I told her that it didn't change the eggs at all (other than now they can hatch babies...)

And now my teacher wants me to explain this all to the class because apparently she didn't know any of this either (most of the conversation took place in front of her).

Kill me now.

It sounds to me like those eggs were spoiled. At the very least they were very very old.

I am new to the chicken world and loving it. I spoke with a man yesterday and told him I had laying hens. He then asked me if I had a rooster and I told him no. He told me he had hens and roosters and eggs that were unfertilized weren't as good and fertilized eggs. I told him that mine were just fine and I've never heard of fertilized eggs tasting better. Has anyone else heard of this? I haven't and can't see anything that would make them taste different.

Mine taste just as good unfertilized...

I've had people say "Wow, you're raising chickens? That must be hard!" Me: "No, not really, why do you say that?" Them: "Well, I've heard it's REALLY hard to get the salmonella under control and that most people just can't cope with all of the disease and give up." Everyone thinks birds are horrid disease ridden creatures! I have no problem eating my chicken's eggs raw. Salmonella and e-coli exist because of factory farming and unhealthy, unhappy animals living in their own feces. I mean, THEY EXIST in nature, but aren't deadly or problematic unless an animal is under extreme stress. People just stare back at you with drool dripping down their chin when you try to explain it...

My mother purchased a few hens that I keep for her because she wanted eggs. She still prefers to buy eggs from a local lady who raises chickens. I think it's because I don't wash the eggs before I give them to her? She's totally grossed out when a fluff of pine bedding is stuck to the shell, or a feather or streak of poo. Somehow the other lady's chicken eggs are better 'cause they come "pre-washed" I guess

She also won't take any of my blue eggs. She says they remind her of the green eggs and ham book, and she's convinced if she cracks one open it'll have a green yolk. She gets so creeped out when I bring her blue eggs!

Way back before I had chickens I had been told that fertilized eggs had lower cholesterol. I still have no idea if it's true or not, but things like that get going around.

I don't wash mine. But wiping poo off is just courteous. A quick wipe (only the dirty spots) with a dry paper towel will leave the bloom intact but go a long way in making your eggs more palatable for others. And lets face it. That egg basket on the counter just looks better when there's no poo.

Not to mention that your kitchen will be easier to keep disease free if there's no feces on the counter.

As for the colored egg thing? Who knows. People just don't get it.

Guy came to buy chicks from me and said he goes a good distance away to a livestock exchange. Offered to be on the look out for me if I was looking for anything in particular. "Egyptian Fayoumis, Salmon Faverolles...." I say. He looks at my husband and says "Is she speaking Spanish or something?!"
