Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

What about the crows eating chicks/ducklings? I would imagine if you fed them enough, they would have no interest!

What about diseases carried by crows? Are they of concern for a flock?

I think if you keep your chicks protected for a couple of months it will be no problem, they don't carry things off with their talons like hawks or owls do, they use their beaks to haul stuff away. I know they will steal and eat eggs if they get the chance.

The crows we have around here don't hang around the areas that our chickens forage in, they mostly stick to the trees and up on the hills that we have nearby. They will come in and eat cat food or bread or whatever we throw out there, but I try to keep that a little ways away from where we actually have our chickens. I don't know what the diseases are that might be carried by crows either, other than west nile virus. I'm sure they do have other diseases or parasites or whatever, but I think the benefits outweigh any potential problems.

I feel you. Yes, if they're fertile, I would definitely refrigerate in Texas.
That summer it stayed above 100 here, if I didn't collect a couple times a day they'd start developing. That really turns egg customers off.

I saw eggs on the shelf in little tiendas in the tropics. Definitely no AC in them. I imagine the hens weren't with roosters.

I live in the tropics and the hens can't avoid roosters...a friend once left her eggs on top of her kerosene fridge...some weeks later she wad confused to hear a strange peeping in her kitchen....

i believe it or not i use crows. yes crows. they live in the tree line about 100 yards from my house and eat the grain wasted by the combine and i throw out stuff for them... if the chickens don't get it first

and i have minimal hawk caused killings and by that i mean i lost a pigeon last year and it must work because my cousin who lives down in the woods behind my house has no crows ever and his chickens practicly live in the bushes to avoid hawks and he lives literally a mile away from me... as the crow flies.

That's a good one.
They sure do hate each other.

That's a good one too. I guess the heat off the fridge compensated for day/night temperature fluctuations.
I guess you just don't open and egg into a fry pan but into a separate bowl just to be on the safe side.
I'm guessing, closer to the equator there isn't the short day length lull when a whole flock will slow down laying.

Well, living in an area where bald eagles and golden eagles thrive, I'd have to differ a little. Just a couple of weeks ago we counted 8 different eagles in a 20 mile drive to a neighboring town. I've seen them take rabbits, prairie dogs, snakes, stray cats, and congregate on road kill, regardless of what it was. Yes, they do fish, and they do it very well. But as someone else said, they are opportunists. And they can be very lazy - it's a lot less effort to dine on something that a car has left than it is to hunt. The area I live in is high desert....we don't have an abundance of lakes, streams or rivers. In order to grow anything we irrigate heavily because it's so dry here. Yet they live very well in our area. If they ate fish almost exclusively, they'd starve to death here, and we would see more of them near the occasional river than in the open desert. I can't agree that it's "the odd bird....that will learn to specialize in other prey." When you see as many eagles as we have, you quickly see that it is ALL of them, not just the "odd bird", which learns to grab whatever is available whenever it is available, and that would include a chicken dinner to go.
I kinda think that they adapt to the area they are in. Desert - anything goes. River bottoms and lake shores - fish.
I said the odd bird will specialize in other prey. Not that they will not take advantage of other prey. Mainly fish eater, in the desert is a completely different story. Around here they take mostly fish, squirrels and rabbits also make up a big part of their diet. Area plays a huge roll in it. I'm not going to list each area. And golden eagles are a whole other thing, they take much larger prey.

My father wanted our first chicks to be named extra crispy, original recipe, and buffalo wings!

They ended up being named Ruby, Amber, and Diamond instead, luckily for them. And me! I already get enough "I'm gonna eat your chickens" jokes without them being named after food.

OMG, I was telling a lady at work the other day that I'll be getting chickens this summer and plan to have lots and lots of eggs. I told her I'd bring some in for her so that she can taste how much better they are.

Know what she said?

Her: "Oh my GAWD, eeeeeewwwwww, I could never eat those eggs!"

Me: "Ummmm, why not?

Her: "Well, BECAUSE, they came out of a chicken's butt!"

Me: "Ummmmm. Huh? You eat eggs from the store, right?"

Her: "Well, yeah, of COURSE, but that's different!"

Me: "How is that different? Those eggs also came out of a chicken."

Her: "But those are all sanitary and come in a box."

Me: "I'll wash my eggs and box them for you too."

Her: "Blech, no way. I could never eat eggs from your chickens. That's just gross."

Me: "***?"

WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE?!

LOL, this is just too much. No wonder I want to quit my job and become a pioneer woman and never have to leave the house...
That is the funniest thing I have heard about chickens!

Someone needs to show her pictures of the production layers in the pens at a factory. She will never eat another store bought egg again!

Ahh... city people...

Can't say I've found anyone like that, yet... lol

Omigosh, I know. >.< Every time I'm showing someone photos of my latest batch of chicks, SOMEONE always makes a comment about eating the babies.

Yes, I get it, chickens are food. Har har. Stop making bad jokes about eating the baby chicks. e_e They weren't even funny the first dozen times I heard them, and they're less funny now.
