Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

The idea of slaughtering non laying chickens has caused a lot of controversy around here lately. People in my town seem to think that chickens are just pets. I agree that they can be very sweet and loving critters. But when you're limited to just 6, you can't afford to have 6 non laying chickens. What are my other options? "Setting them free" in the woods? People freak out because I kill and eat my rabbits.
We currently have rabbits, chickens, and ducks. They have their jobs. If they do not produce in one way they will in another. People who have a problem with me raising my own food, I explain in detail how their store bought food is raised. I have had several who now think like me.

I just sent two of my roos to freezer camp. Actually only one went, the other is going to be the star attraction at supper.

My children are learning farm life and that we will be sending several of our animals to freezer camp when the time comes. They can not believe we would do this and keep telling me they are not food they are pets. They are going to have to learn the hard way. It will not be easy but they will learn this is the same as eating animals from the grocery store. We do give them all names and treat them like all our other animals and when the time comes it will be sad but it is a fact of life.

So don't tell them.. it's just that simple..

unless they are paying your feed bill they have no business knowing if the birds (or rabbits for that matter) move from the pen to the freezer..

in my opinion... if a person feels the need to tell everything they do to anyone who will listen.. then they are just asking for the opinions they get...

The reason it came up was because our town was getting ready to vote to allow chickens, where previously they didn't. I was concerned that people would just dump their older chickens up the canyon. I plan to operate under the don't ask, don't tell rule. I've spoken at length to both neighbors on either side of me and they don't really care. One is a hunter and the other wants chickens eventually too.

I love my animals but I have to be realistic about their life expectancy and the cost to raise them. I can guarantee they will have happy lives while they live with me, even if they are ultimately destined for the stock pot.

Best way to raise an animal.

When I was growing up, the rule was this. We didn't eat pets and we didn't make pets out of food. Period. If you butcher a child's pet, they will never, ever forgive you. As a parent it is your obligation to teach them the difference between pets and food. And make it very clear what the critter is the minute you bring it home.

Oh, it was very clear except for in our very mean goats case we had no intentions of making him dinner. I did allow them to name them but I was very clear that if they were Roos then we could not keep all and they would have to be food and if the ducks were drakes we could choose only one drake the rest would have to be food. Also I am not willing to pawn my mean weathered goat off on anyone else as he is a liability and this has been clearly explained to all of them.

We homeschool. ..so technically my kids already have taken the eggs to school. Lol. I can't really move them at work because I live and work at a vegan institution! There are two other egg sellers on our country road, including my neighbor's brother (she buys from me though lol). I have a sign.

We live in an economically depressed area where organic/free range/etc is not really valued. In general I have found over the last four years that those willing and able to pay $3 plus a dozen think that backyard eggs are nasty (but not the grocery store version). Those that like backyard eggs are unable to pay $3 plus. I can move more eggs at $2.50 then $3.

We market heavily using person to person marketing. When picking up chicks at the post office yesterday I passed out business cards. I give out free half dozens to hesitant customers. The egg business is really my 12 year old son's. Money raised goes to camp. He started a loyalty program with some occasional customers that if they buy five dozen in a calendar month the sixth is free. Now instead of them buying one or two dozen a month they are buy five.

Never fear. The eggs won't "go to waste." Work has been crazy and I haven't had time to take him to town to sell.

wow. I guess I really *am* better off than I thought. Thanks for the reality check! 7
