Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

I heard one on a cartoon yesterday:

Chickens are good followers. How else do they wind up in the same freezer section of the Supermarket?

I agree that it is just up to the individual. For example I have 3 horses that are just converting hay. While they have a purpose as they can be ridden and work cattle etc... according to anyone who has ever eaten them, equine meat is delicious. To me I could never eat them but I would be more likely to if it was some horse who I had never met and had a bond with. To some having a pet of any animal type is senseless ecspecially once they are no longer productive. It is like the difference between a cow which we eat readliy and a horse, or a Koi and a river carp or a parakeet and a chicken. Culture dictates what is acceptable to eat as does production costs. As people become more "civilized", we become more and more removed from where our food originates and just choose not to think about it.

Well by that logic, that would make people who keep chickens, but who won't eat their eggs and can't bear the thought of their little babies ending up on a platter, but who STILL buy store meat and eggs from factory farms the biggest hipocrites in the world. I guess they would rather eat the same meat and eggs as long as they never saw that cute face or heard them chatting with their little chicken friends. The only people who would be exempt are those who keep their chickens, but will not eat any poultry product at all.
And I have yet to meet anyone who says, "I decided never to eat chicken or eggs again now that I have my babies" or "I always hated chicken meat and eggs, but I like having them around anyway" - it's completely illogical.

I haven't read all of these, but what I've read cracks me up.

The one thing that annoys the @#%$ out of me, though, are the chicken commercials (perdue, tyson, etc.) that claim that their chickens eat "a 100% vegetarian diet!" like it's a GOOD thing! All that means is, they're fed 100% corn. Sheesh! Their poor chickens never get to scratch in the dirt for worms, bugs,etc...

These are not really back yard farms, but the few surviving family farms that have been in our area for generations. They are of a very different sort than the young rock star farmer with a degree in agriculture or resource management, or the backyard "farmer" who keeps a small flock for fun, for eggs, and a few extra to sell. The long term family farmers around here tend to be less interested in concepts like organic and animal welfare. They might keep something like 50-100 hens "free ranging" in a big barn. It's local, and it's better than battery cages, but the hens are kept at rather high density, so they are debeaked to prevent cannibalism. It's sort of like the set up of Pete and Gerry's Organic eggs, which you can buy in the supermarket (at least here in New England). Those hens range in a big barn and are also debeaked.
I just find it sad to alter an animal just because of the way you choose to keep it...not nice

$4 a dozen for free range mostly organic eggs (feed is organic soy free, but some treats are of inferior quality). So I think $2 is really low!
I thought I was over pricing. I get used cartons to put the eggs into. These cartons are so "old" that they have stickers on them from the previous "backyard farmer" that sold them for 1.65. I asked hubby (it's his friend's mother that's buying them) why isn't she buying them from the previous folks if they were selling them for cheaper. We think they got out of the chicken/egg business. I still am selling them for more than the grocery stores. I know, I know. I've got a better quality, fresher product than they do. And she's taking extra eggs off my hands (although now I reserve eggs for her and don't allow myself as many eggs).

Caveat emptor, or let the buyer beware! PR people make a fortune thinking of *just* the right way to word things so the nonthinkers among us will fall for their slight of hand. But, people who actually take the time and effort to think through what they hear and read, like you, aren't so easily fooled. Just more case of Natural Selection.

One good way to find out what eggs are going for in your area is to look on Craig's list, particularly in the summer and fall when there are a lot of ads from backyard farmers. If you do not find any ads on Craig's list, you might be the only one who is selling the real deal in your area, so you might just want to charge more. The reality is that you'll find out very quickly that there is a demand for real food and a limited supply. (Particularly if your gals truly are free-range or if you feed an organic feed or an organic, soy-free feed.) Therefore, the price should go up. Those that don't want real food can continue to go to the grocery store.

I dont have enough eggs to share yet but I wanted to show them off to my family member so took some to a get together. My mom had a dozen from a neighbor that raises chickens and she was a little disappointed, she noted that they were much fresher than the store but they just didn't taste as good as she remembered growing up. The next morning we decided to make eggs for breakfast and in the process we cracked 2 eggs (one mine one from the neighbor) side by side...both very fresh and healthy looking and both from brown shells.. However mine, the free range had bright orange, creamy yolks while the others were similar to the store bought yellow...and that is the taste she remembered growing up. So if you do indeed have free range eggs and someone is giving you a hard timme on price all you need to do is crack an egg or give them a few for a trial...they'll be back!!
