I got my red layer from a battery farm as a pullet. The poor thing has all kinds of health problems. None of my heritage hens has had any real health problems. Ive only dealt with a poked eye on Ghost once. Other than that, all my girls are in excellent health!

Cracker lays enormous eggs. Her "sister" who I got at the same time, I had to put down due to egg binding with an egg that had an egg inside an egg.

These poor battery birds go through hell!

Im very glad I was able to rescue the pair, and I might see if i can get more if I can find the guy again. Of all my birds, Cracker is the friendliest, she loves people and is very inquisitive, we carry her around all the time. Imagine that after going through what she has!

I had some NN/Polish for sale at a swap, and someone said "poor hen got all of its neck feathers picked off by the rooster over breeding her". I said "No, HE is a naked neck, and HE is supposed to look like that."

I mean he's 4-5 months old so He's just starting to get the pointed feathers, but He's an obvious rooster.

There where also someone that came up and said, "OMG, that bird is so ugly, EWWWWW!!" very loudly, I guess to make sure everyone could here them.

Some people are just rude.

Are their necks supposed to look like that?
Did you shave it?
Is it a chicken or a turkey?
Is it a turkey x chicken cross?

My NNs are the biggest cause for stupid questions :p
I once read in a book where it said," Sometimes, a turkey and a chicken can mate. The babies will have bare necks and less than normal feathering, and are called 'Naked Necks' or 'Turkens'"

Which book? Because that's not true.

Here is a documented hybrid.

Note that turkeys don't have nearly as naked of heads as NN turkens do. NN's are bare, turkeys (females at least) have feathers all the way up their head.

Example of a male turkey's head

Now an example of a female turkey's head:

Looks nothing like the NN turkens to me.

My nephew had turkens...NN for 4-H one year and I mistakenly told my husband he has tur-duck-hens...like the Thanksgiving thing where you put the chicken and duck inside the turkey...oops!!

I guess ignorance is bliss right??
