I've had lots of people, friends, and relatives pose questions to me since we started raising questions. Inquisitive but totally uneducated and unknowing questions. One of my favorites is that everyone believes a rooster is needed for a hen to lay eggs. Trying to explain that a hen doesnt need a rooster to lay eggs was like asking where do babies come from mommy? Mind you that these were adults asking this question. The second and my most favorite was "Why" is that rooster pecking that hens neck and head all the time? Doesnt he like her? Why is he being so mean! Duhhh!

Yeah my daughter asked that one yesterday. Her 12 yr old brother looked at her like she was stupid and said "it's mating"

She still wanted to know why he had to peck her neck like that. I said I guess because he hasn't got hands to hang on with lol

So maybe its not that they don't guess the act but rather the question relates to the way they look so mean when they do it?

I would have never thought it was possible for a cross breed between chickens and turkeys because they are 2 different animals but I guess it's like a donkey and a horse crossbreeding to make an mule (if I am rembering the cross right they produce an offspring that is sterile).

Correct, mules are sterile

ahh 95% of mules are sterile, there is a herd of 15 mules bred from two fetile mules and all therir ofspring were fertile

I got my first chicks the first week of August(after lots and lots of research) and they stayed in my bathtub until they were about 10 weeks old. Every week after I moved them outside my father in law would ask me if they are laying yet. I kept explaining that they were too young still and it would be at least December and possible spring. I tried to explain the number of hours of light in the day and how that effects egg laying, ect. He wouldn't hear it. He said "they won't lay without laying mash. You feed them laying mash and they will start" Urgh

I gave up trying to explain. I put them on the layer pellets at 19 weeks and after that when he asked I replied "guess they didn't get that memo" lol

btw, my first(a barred rock) started laying at 21 weeks but I'm still patiently waiting on the other 8.

Ask him why he didn't start fathering children after he was whesned. He eats they same foods he's eaten since he was a child so he also should still be fathering children. Using his logic it seems correct to me......

I was just browsing and ran across this thread. So glad people took the time to post. Made me laugh! Now I think I'll start a thread about the cutest things children have said about our chickens. Our grandson asked, "What keeps the chickens from falling forward when they run?"

All my birds are cherished pets. I once had my Aiko out with me and someone asked me what she was.

She's an OEGB mix. I guess anything other than the white birds you see in advertising isn't a chicken. XD


OHH, and also people who think "chickens" and "roosters" are separate things….. I've heard that one too much. .-.

My mother who had chickens when she was younger told me to make sure when my hens start laying to take the rooster away from the hens otherwise we will not be able to eat the eggs. LOL ok Mom!!
