my neighbor informed me today that there are only 2 breeds of chickens, big ones and banties.

I wish someone would have told me that before I bought all of these rare breeds.

I get the "OH MY, what is wrong with that chicken? It is missing the feathers on its neck".

I have 3 naked necks.

Some people also think that chickens only come in the colors of red, white and black. I just shake my head.

HEY! Those ARE the colors of my flock! Along with the one GLW & one Gold-Laced Polish! Hoping to add some more colors if/when my eggs in my 'bator ever decide to hatch! Lavender Orpingtons, Double-Barred English Lemon Cuckoo Orpingtons, French Black Copper Marans, and Ameraucanas. Today is day 23, and just discovered that the brand-new incubator has been running at 97 degrees instead of the 99.5 it's supposed to have been running at all this time, per the digital thermostat... that means the hatch will be delayed! It's a GQF Genesis 1588 Hovabator, and ALL the reviews I've read said that it maintains the temps/humidity accurately. Guess mine's an exception!

(BTW, did a float test last night, and the egg I tested floated to indicate that it was still alive, and it wiggled in the water, so that's a good sign!)

I have to set the digital thermometer to 101.2 to keep the Genesis at 99.5. I hope they hatch ok for you!

My mom doesn't like the look of silkies, because they look like poodles that can't see, or something. I remember before I got in to chickens, I never knew there were different breeds! I thought the brown eggs were the organic ones. Apparently, I wouldn't (or couldn't) read the carton.
The other day, I told my 8 year old cousin that I have 3 chickens that will lay (aren't laying yet) green or blue eggs, his eyes got big and he smiled, and he excitedly went and told his mom. I thought that was cute. :)
