This is all too funny!!

I get asked all the time (by adults!!) whether we will have baby chickens in our eggs. . . even when they know we have only hens. Then we get asked "well how does a rooster fertilize an egg?" and I have to walk them through chicken sex-ed. Should be obvious, I would think.

i get these questions a lot too. ive been thinking about recording a "chicken porn" for the "city slickers". im sure its happened to us all, i actually had someone argue with me that the rooster fertilizes the eggs by hovering over them in the nest.

Ask them just how the sperm is supposed to penetrate the shell. Then tell me. I wanna know.

LeslieDJoyce,

Can you please tell me what CAFO and TED stands for in your last post? Thanks!

A CAFO is a Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (sometimes referred to as a Factory Farm, or Batter Farm when talking about chickens). Here is a link to a wikipedia article about CAFOs: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concentrated_Animal_Feeding_Operation

TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design ... it is an organization that hosts conferences where people give "talks" on all kinds of subjects (Ideas Worth Spreading). One can either attend the conferences in person, or watch the recorded videos online. Here is a link to TED.com's "About" page: http://www.ted.com/pages/about and here is a link to a list of TED talks about food: http://firstwefeast.com/eat/16-ted-talks-that-will-make-you-smarter-about-food/

I have this conversation with people all the time.

Ignorant person: "But what if your chicken flies away when you let it outside?"

Me: "Have you ever seen chickens migrate?"

Ignorant person: "Oh, no."

Some people are just so silly.

I got this question from my dad the other day:

Dad: "Can your chickens swim?"

Me: "OMG DAD NO!!!!"

Dad: "Hahaha. I thought that since ducks can swim, that chickens could too."

What is this world coming to???

My grandma said, "Well now that you got rid of your rooster, how is she still laying eggs?"

"So, if you don't have a rooster will the eggs still hatch?" Yeah, that's what will happen. Virgin birth is very common in chickens.
