"So, if you don't have a rooster will the eggs still hatch?" Yeah, that's what will happen. Virgin birth is very common in chickens.

I have this conversation with people all the time.

Ignorant person: "But what if your chicken flies away when you let it outside?"

Me: "Have you ever seen chickens migrate?"

Ignorant person: "Oh, no."

Some people are just so silly.

I got this question from my dad the other day:

Dad: "Can your chickens swim?"

Me: "OMG DAD NO!!!!"

Dad: "Hahaha. I thought that since ducks can swim, that chickens could too."

What is this world coming to???
Your dad's question isnt that dumb... chickens can swim. They just avoid it.... usually, There is always those few weird animals that want to do the opposite

Not exactly dumb, just unexpected conversation today.

We had some visitors over today, they brought their little niece along who had never seen a real chicken before. During the chat we talked about coloured eggs and so on.

Our friend (the Aunt) asked,

"How often do they lay eggs?"
"Usually most days, some are less, safe to expect 4 or 6 a week from most of our breeds"
"Oh, but how long for, like two weeks and then you have to wait until next year?"
"Um, no. They lay like that for about 2 years, and then it tapers off less and less as they get older"
"FOR REAL! They pop one of those bad boys out nearly every day for YEARS!"
"Hahahahaha,Yeah"

I had to laugh. Later she admitted she wondered how people synced it so they always had eggs lol.

Loveourbirds, your comment on making a chicken porn video made me laugh!!! Being new to owning chickens, I didn't exactly know "how the deed was done" so I watched it on YouTube! Now I feel a little guilty ;-)

We have our coup/run in a thick woods behind our house. There are a number of predators in the woods (hawks already got 2 of by buff orpingtons).
We put a large bowl of water for them to play in and cool off. After watching them jump in, a friend said "I think they are baptizing themselves just in case they don't make it through the night"
I laughed SO hard!

They cannot swim very long though. They will become water logged and drown. It is not a good idea to let them swim much.

I can't think of where I've seen the photo (Grit,Mother Earth News, or Backyard Poultry mag. newsletters) but I've recently seen a photo of a boy in the swimming pool and a barred rock hen floating nearby. I didn't read the accompanying article to know details but I do remember the picture.

They do not have a lot of oil for their feathers, so they become water logged and cannot float--It might take a bit of time but they will eventually drown.

Yes, slightly off the topic off chickens, when we asked the In-laws what they wanted to watch on TV they said, "No documentaries. We don't want to learn about anything." That truly says it all doesn't it?!

My former mother-in-law used to make fun of me for watching shows on channels like Discovery and National Geographic.

She actually had the nerve to ask me why didn't I watch something on TV that "normal" women watch - soap operas or game shows.

She also told me I read too many books. I really regret marrying into that gene pool and reproducing. My son is just like them. Apparently the dumb gene is very dominant and he got nothing from me except my facial features.
