Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

The OP posted a very helpful post to a Dependent of Parents that will not let them have chickens. I read the part about chickens relying on humans as meaning that they will not, in most places, live in the wild. Care is minimal but there still has to be care given and the person not allowed to have chickens can go provide that care at another persons place.

Kudos to the OP! That is a great idea!

Thanks. Not to be too serious in this humor thread (again), I do think keeping animals is one of the biggest responsibilities we humans have. We keep the animals for our service and/or pleasure and I believe we owe the animals we keep our best in return. Without getting into all the minutia of properly caring for even totally free-range chickens, it is good to have a back-up system in place just in case a person can't live up to that responsibility. Being a chicken-sitter could be a lot of fun, and would be a wonderful service to both the chickens and the humans involved. I would jump at the chance to work with an enthusiastic chicken lover who can't have chickens at home.

Volunteering at an animal shelter would also be a good way to see what can happen when people fail in their responsibility to care for animals.

Quote: it scares me a little when people talk about doing what my wife and i do here. yes chicken care per chicken is minimal. but we spend about 6 hours a day taking care of our chickens (each). as breeders - pens have to be cleaned, nails and beaks trimmed, there's always bumble foot to be operated on, or other chickens in need of some sort of medical attention, and of course feeding and watering. after all of that is done in the heat of the season, we do about 2 hours worth of paperwork a night.
i hear so many people, saying they want to do this - but their spouse works. i dont think they realize the hours it takes in a day, its not impossible for one person to do; but you have to give up much of your "fun life" to do this. you have to love it to do it.

on a humorous note - i do my best to breed as many excellent quality chicks that i can in a period of time. i beat my head against the wall trying to get as many as possible and spread the joy of raising chickens. on the other hand we have 4 dogs, 2 males 2 females. the one female is registered blue heeler, we didnt have her fixed so we could breed some each year. we had decided not to breed this year because of expanding the chicken end of our farm, well to shorten a long story; she got loose and bred by one of our males. 13 pups this morning. <-- when you dont want a large number thats when it always happens.

It didn't happen unless you provide photographic proof. I want puppy pictures!

Gracie (mother) is really thin. i guess its because of the size of the litter. i'm thinking of getting some biljack (spelling) to feed her unless someone tells me different. any suggestions?

some will be red and some will be blue like her. they get their colors later on - like dalmations.

Daw!!! I want to crawl in there and cuddle! I know beans about dog nutrition but my lab won't eat his healthy food unless I put egg in it. Of course he begs for human food and eats all the chicken poo he can find ... silly boy.

Completely dependent every minute? I assume you keep watch your chickens every minute they out free-ranging? And what of those that actually make their chickens free-range during the summer for 80-100% of their food, not paying attention to them except to close the coop at night? Chickens were meant to be low-maintenance. People really over-complicate chicken-raising. As long as you live in a relatively predator-free area with access to water, chickens easily can take care of themselves.
I agree that chickens are a fairly low maintenance of pet .Especially when you only have a small flock to care for. My dogs and cats seem to require more care. Just thinking of the list for dogs alone there are a ton of things that should be done. Like they should have a good walk daily if they are kept cooped up in the house or in a run, some sort of basic training, yearly check ups/ vaccinations, monthly HW preventative(especially here in Fl) Monthly or bi monthly flea preventative(or flea dip baths), daily water changes and feedings and also clean beds/bedding ,trimmed nails(if they don't wear them down by walking on sidewalks) sometimes daily grooming(especially for long haired breeds.), a bath once in awhile, and someone always has to scoop the poop at least weekly, especially in small yards.
Back onto chickens though since concrete works so well wearing down my dogs toenails when they walk on it on our daily excursions , I provided 2 cinderblocks for my hens to climb and wipe their beaks and nails on. Seems to have worked out well so far. My BO really enjoys it as she is always standing on it flapping her wings strutting and swiping her beak against the block.

I used to feed my lab canned food mixed with her regular when she had puppies.
i have thought about this, and its probably what i will do when i get some weight back on her. she was so big from the puppies, she couldnt fit in her dog house. i didnt realize she was so thin until this morning. my wife is headed to the store right now, she was going to try to find some discounted hamburger to mix in her feed.
