I was at the farm supply store recently getting items for my new brood of chicks that I'm incubating. One of the employees that knows me was asking me what I was up to.
Me: My husband got me an incubator for my birthday, so I'm pretty excited. I've got 20 eggs in there right now.
Him: Do you have any roosters?
(Because I guess I seem like the kind of person who would try to incubate eggs without a rooster in my flock?)
Me: Yeah, actually, we have 11.
Him: Well, only the dominant rooster will actually mate with your hens.
Me: Well, he gets the most action, but he's not the only one breeding with the hens.
Him: The top rooster won't let the other roosters mate, so he'll be the only one mating with the hens and giving you chicks.
I explained to him that we've already hatched out a few chicks under a broody, and while our alpha rooster certainly sired the MOST chicks, he wasn't the ONLY contributor. After that, the employee got a grumpy face and wandered away like I just didn't know what I was talking about.
Nevermind the fact that we HAVE 11 roosters because that store keeps selling us straight run marked as pullets only
