Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

Wow, I went from the first two pages, skipped to the last and my brain de-railed. I was going to post something about not thinking I can find the time to read all 200+ pages, but I have got to find where it went from "Are the green ones spoiled?" to "The fruit fly has a longer...than his body."
It may have been me. I brought a dozen of my eggs to my wife's family's Easter get together. They didn't need dye. White, cream, light brown, various shades of very dark to reddish maroon, plum and green.

I showed everyone and claimed I dyed them. After deliberation they agreed they weren't dyed. Then her niece (in her 20s) asked if they were safe to eat. I said, 'yes, why"? She said, "that one's green, it's spoiled."

...

And another dumb thing, my friend visited yesterday:

Her: "Wow, those roosters are really big! Are they trying to kill each other yet?"

The 2 roosters bobbled happily past us about the garden with their hens.

Me: "No."

Her (Snobby tone) : "You know they will, roosters ALWAYS fight to the death with each other."

Me: "Well mine don't."

Her (Snort): They will. And then you'll be left with just one." (Go figure)

Me: "Well, when it happens I'll just let you know, but I don't think it will."

Her (Nose in the air!) stalks over to the coop & looks in: "And you need to block this gap up to stop them getting cold!"

Me: Ah, actually, that's for ventilation."

She stares at me & then back at the the coop window which is meshed over & announced:

"No, they don't need good ventilation, my friend had her birds just in a closed up shed."

Me: "Yeh, remember her birds?"

Her: "Yeh?"

Me: "Remember how many died each month?"

Her: "???"

Me: "That's what happens with lack of ventilation."

Her: "Oh..... I thought it was because it got too cold."

We agreed to disagree in the end

Everyone thinks that because they're cold, the chickens should be.

..
.

I had a neighbor who did the chickens in the greenhouse thing - no ventilation. She no longer has any chickens, they all died.

When I first started with chickens, my sisters wanted eggs until they found out I had a rooster. They didn't want to kill baby chicks. Fortunately they were willing to listen and learn that chicks don't start forming until a hen sets on them. Now I can't give them enough eggs. Need more chickens....

...
I'm very cautious of giving eggs away. After a dozen, they think they should all be free. I have 2 sets of friends I had to cut off because they never would offer to pay.

I occasionally give some to neighbors when I have plenty.

Me: "Lots of reasons. Mostly more involvement in what I eat and another step towards self sustainability".
--- "Oohh, so your one of those people..."
Me: "Kind of what people exactly?"
--- "Those people always holding picket signs to save farms and going to farmers markets and stuff."
Me: "Well actually you are right. I am. Whats wrong with that? You like food right?"
--- "Of course, but why make such a fuss when there are stores everywhere?"
Me: "..................(hold back expletive remark)................Huh, well I gotta go. My wife started a Stork Courier service and they have some babies to deliver".
--- "Whats that supposed to mean?"
Me: "Exactly". And just walked away.

I have heard jokes about the whole "no need for farms with all of the grocery stores around", but I really did not think it was an actual subject! haha!

We have 93 different cities of various sizes in our county, each with their own chicken rules.
City councils vote on those rules with no idea what chickens are like or moreover, BYCs.
I speak to many of them and urge them to take a field trip to a backyard chicken coop before they take a vote. Several are starting to take me up on the offer.
I even got my city to pay for our code enforcement officer's attendance at one of my chicken keeping classes.

I wish it was acceptable to have a stack of I'm stupid signs and hand them out when needed.
I agree! We should be able to pass out signs. Start a petition. I'll sign!
I had to attend lots of tolerance, harassment and PC classes and seminars with a big Corp..
We all know that religion, ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation etc. are protected groups.
After weeks off and on of blah, blah, blah, I came to a conclusion.
There are still 2 unprotected groups. Ugly and stupid.
Another realization, ugly people know they're ugly, but stupid people don't know they're stupid.

There's a third unprotected group that is ridiculed regularly, denied jobs, discriminated against solely due to appearance, etc: Obese

Quote: WOW that must be some big county! In my county we have one city one town with local government elected offices, and about 2 dozen unincorperated towns that many used to be about maybe a dozen buisnesses a couple of churchs a school perhaps and many of them now are a clump of maybe a dozen houses a church or two, a few (2-3) buisnesses (usually closed) and a sign if they are lucky saying "spot in the road" and if you blink you miss the sign and the town.

In our company, obese was a protected group, as I think it is in most of society.

It's very interesting, it is a normal sized county with an unusual history. Almost every city in the US (actually all but 2), is a legal entity of the county in which they are located. As such, they can annex new land from the county as they grow. When Missouri became a state in 1821 all was good. But in the next 50 years, the city and county came at odds. By 1876 it came to a head and one choice was to create 2 distinct legal entities thereby creating a county of the city of St. Louis - distinct from the county of St. Louis. The plan was to be voted on by all citizens of both city and county. The separation appeared to be rejected by voters by 2000 votes. One voting district seemed to have some hundred or so fraudulent votes and a recount commission investigating reversed the will of the citizens and approved the separation.
The city then picked a boundary they thought the population would never grow beyond. Silly, that. It wasn't long before - one of the fastest growing cities of the time - the population rapidly grew beyond those boundaries and today encompasses almost the entire land mass. Everywhere a cluster of houses and businesses appeared, a few ambitious politicians created a new city, each of which - unlike the city of St. Louis - is capable of annexing land from the county. The result is 91 legal municipal entities, 9 unincorporated in addition to the city of St. Louis. The population of each of these 'cities' range from under 100 to well over 50,000. It has hurt the area in that each of these postage stamp size and larger municipalities must maintain a public works department, mayor, city council, town halls, etc.. Some have relinquished their police departments to save money and contract with St. Louis county police for protection.
Further confusing the matter is that school districts and fire protection districts bear no resemblance to those city boundaries. As you may surmise, there are common street names within several of the cities.
Just as an aside to this story and interestingly enough, last week, there was a fire at an address in Florissant. The 911 operator sent the fire department to the identical address in Ferguson. They arrived, and surprisingly there was no fire. At the same time the house at the same address in Florissant was completely destroyed.

What makes this tough for people wanting to have chickens, or do anything else they want to do on their own property, ordinances vary - sometimes wildly.
There can be one person that may be allowed an unlimited number of chickens and roosters. His neighbor directly across the street may be restricted to 4 chickens and the guy at the end of the street can have none at all. Bizarre and insane IMO. Another interesting thing is that the most wealthy areas are those most likely to have few or no restrictions, while the poorest most crime ridden areas disallow chickens. After all, I can only assume, they wouldn't want anyone to think they were uppity.
I, along with some of our 650+ member chicken meetup group have become very active throughout the county trying to get or keep chickens legal.
Uphill battle with so many cities. A couple years ago, I went to war with my city and won. I have a permit for 85 chickens and 5 roosters. We are 7 and 1 in other cities so far.

Thanks for reading. I know this may seem so strange to people living in normal city/counties.

I have one sister who helped out financially a few years ago, she gets free eggs for life. Sometimes it's not a complete dozen. My other sister pays $5/dozen.

Wow. This thread is a time warp. How long have I been here?....... :)
As I laugh at so many of these I cant help but feel sorry for so many people on both sides. Chicken owners for having to deal with such a closed minded society, but most of all for those that choose bliss over intelligence. *cough*social engineering*cough* ;) I am still in the process of getting things ready and have still to get my chicks in the spring, and I have already been through some similar interactions. I have been through it all before with my Pitbull. I have had him for over 5 years now along with my other dog (shes is a work mutt) for over 7yrs, and I still have all of my appendages, and so do my children. I dont have to feed him the neighbors cats, and he runs at all of the local off leash dog parks without exterminating anything and everything with a pulse. Most of my family laughed when I said I was getting chickens. They all pretty much said that Rocky (my Pitbull AKA "Chicken Dog") always needed to be with his own kind. How he got that nick name is a story for another day. :) Im glad to have support from the people who matter most. My worst conversation so far and probably EVER was this:

---"Chickens? In your yard? Why?
Me: "Lots of reasons. Mostly more involvement in what I eat and another step towards self sustainability".
--- "Oohh, so your one of those people..."
Me: "Kind of what people exactly?"

I think my local supermarkets are all supplied by factories........ from the taste of some of the food, it might as well be

I don't even grace people like that with an answer because it is quite pathetic having to explain a simple answer

Chickadee, please tell me a bit about your dog.  Looks like our last dog.  We've been dogless for about 10 years.  She was a terrier mix, 45#, and probably the smartest dog I've ever met.  She loved to play hide and seek.  She'd even take turns doing the hiding!

Sure lazy gardener. Her name is Bella and she's a rescue. She's 5 years old, and we think she's part terrier and maybe a bit Australian Shepard. She's not exactly the smartest dog in the world :p she is extremely affectionate and will lick anything and everything.:) Bella is very good with our chickens and try's to play with them!:)
Your dog sounds like a very clever, friendly dog and I'm sorry for your loss.
