Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

So, tonight, I told my MIL that I was going to hatch a bunch of eggs again this spring.

MIL: So, are you just going to hatch hens this time?

Me: What do you mean?

MIL: Last year you hatched a bunch of roosters.

Me: I won't know until they hatch whether they are girls or boys.

MIL: Well, aren't you going to candle the eggs?

Me: Yes, I will candle them. That will tell me if they are developing.

MIL: So, you'll just hatch the girls, right?

Im 23 and live in the suburbs of sydney...many many of my friends think its so backwards to own chickens. One said to me "oh I will NOT eat an egg with wierd jelly like whites! They HAVE to spread completely for me to eat it!" ....um....well....I unsuccessfully tried to explain to her that the eggs she enjoys are old and the jelly like whites indicate how fresh they are. ..she said "oh I dont care,id rather eat eggs from the store and know its an egg instead of cracking yours and a chicken pops out!that would give me anxiety!" I gave up with that one. I have no roosters and was also asked how they are even laying eggs with no male. I was also told my eggs arent edible because they will have chickens in it and that science is so amazing that chicken farms have special chickens that only lay edible eggs that never grows chickens and I should offer a farmer to sell me the enhanced chickens. Its sad because I feel like soon no young people here will raise chickens because of their lack of information and narrow minds.

It took my wife years before she would eat an egg from our hens. Why you ask? She thought since it wasn't store bought it was yucky....... If I only knew that before I said I do! LOL.

Hahahaha this is a great thread XD I love all these stories. Ok I've got one that happened recently.
So my brother was like, " Ewwww this chicken egg has poop on it. That is DISGUSTING!"
Me- Wow, you baby just eat it! Store bought eggs had poop on them. They wash it off just like you can.
"BUT THOSE EGGS COME FROM NORMAL CHICKENS!"
Me- WHAT DOES THAT MEAN??
"Oh I think you know"
Me- *facepalm* Your stupidity is just too overwhelming right now...

I agree with that last part. Being in high school, I know of few other kids who raise chickens. I also know few adults who raise chickens, except for those here on BYC. And I'm in the FFA program at school where kids are able to raise animals and grow crops for projects, and I think there are two kids out of 800 besides me who raise chickens. There are already too few of us raising chickens. However, I've convinced some of my friends to purchase chickens of their own after seeing my birds. So there's hope for us yet!

That's how it is for me, too!  I have all the tools to start a garden and I raise the chickens (mostly by myself) and yet it's like pulling teeth to get anyone to help me.  Here I am looking for locally grass fed beef and goat's milk while Dad is bringing home chicken nuggets.  Jeez.

The only consolation I have is that when I can get them to purchase all the organic/non-GMO ingredients I need for a meal, they love it.  I just wish I wouldn't have to work so hard to get the proper ingredients in the first place.  It's very frustrating.  For a family that has plenty of health problems, you'd think they'd be more interested in bettering themselves. 

Same here. I raise the chickens on my own. Nobody else in the family has much interest in them (they do love the eggs though)!!! I try to get my parents to buy organic foods and foods labeled "non-GMO". Though they tell me that they don't care about wether it's organic or not, I notice all the time how we are slowly having an increase in the amount organic food we have in the house. I think I'm finally getting through to them! I think hat the most detrimental factor to buying organic food to them is the increase in price compared to other foods. I think it's worth it though when I comes to the health of our family.
