Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

The bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) is a member of the sea and fish eagle group. Its closest relatives, similar in appearance and habit, are found in Africa and Asia. Bald eagles live along the coast as well as by major lakes and rivers. Even though they are fish eaters, they will take ducks and birds or whatever prey is available and easiest to obtain. They fish in both fresh and salt water.

A bald eagle's lifting power is about 4 pounds. They do not generally feed on chickens or other domestic livestock, but they will make use of available food sources. Bald eagles will take advantage of carrion (dead and decaying flesh), giving it a scavenger image, which causes some people to dislike eagles. Other people do not care for powerful and aggressive birds; while some object merely on the grounds that it is a bird of prey which kills other animals for food.

My mom has seen them eating a deer carcass. Obviously they didn't bring it down (hit by car), but knew a good meal when they saw one. Thankfully, eagles haven't seen my chickens but this year I have had a hawk. I've seen plenty of them driving between work and home but this was the first year I had one in my yard and eating my chicken. Since i can't legally kill it, I bought a camo net from Army/Navy surplus store (hubby said the air force fly overs will see a radar 'dead zone' because the net has some quality about it to hide army tanks from radar).

Terrific research. I stand corrected. However, I don't think the ones we have here read the book. But here they are, and you can see the terrain is a far cry from a lake, a river, or an ocean. That's a great idea about the camo net. If it can keep the air force from seeing that spot then it should fool a hawk or eagle. We had one in the dead tree across the street for a few minutes two or three years ago. It landed there, scoped out the area and left before I even had the lens off my camera, the goofy thing!

I hope you can see all three bald eagles in this shot. Two are on top of the rocks and one is down and to the right of them. Bad photos, sorry - using my iPhone.

Two flew off and left this one standing guard over the rabbit they had taken.

And this one flew over the car.

We passed this one a little ways down the road...could be one of the three, or could be another one. Hard to tell.

Wow! They're gorgeous! I remember once when I lived in Colorado I saw a family of Golden Eagles. That was amazing. But there's just something majestic about a bald eagle.

my understanding Thomas Jefferson wanted a turkey (wild of course) to be our national symbol instead of the Eagle because they are dirty birds

Quote: I don't mean to "correct" you. I believed you when you said you saw eagles.

LOL about them not having "read the book" on their living choices. Really cool that you've seen and captured photos of them (as long as they aren't eating our poultry -right?).

My hubby's joking about the net didn't come across (I knew it when I wrote it)...I'm not good at joke telling and even worse at joke typing. :)

Oh I didn't take it as a correction at all! In fact, I find it amusing that some reliable sources are just determined that all critters follow a rigid set of ideas on habitat and habits. And even if you had been correcting me, that's fine too! I've been known to be mistaken a more than a few times in my 60+ years on this planet and you know what? The sun still came up the next morning and the birdies still sang! What's important is the exchange of ideas and information. And if the camo stuff was a joke, you pulled it off beautifully - I fell for it hook, line and sinker!

Actually it was Benjamin Franklin in a letter to his daughter...... here is part of the letter.

"Others object to the Bald Eagle, as looking too much like a Dindon, or Turkey. For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen the Representative of our Country. He is a Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get his Living honestly. You may have seen him perched on some dead Tree near the River, where, too lazy to fish for himself, he watches the Labour of the Fishing Hawk [Osprey]; and when that diligent Bird has at length taken a Fish, and is bearing it to his Nest for the Support of his Mate and young Ones, the Bald Eagle pursues him and takes it from him.
With all this Injustice, he is never in good Case but like those among Men who live by Sharping & Robbing he is generally poor and often very lousy. Besides he is a rank Coward: The little King Bird not bigger than a Sparrow attacks him boldly and drives him out of the District. He is therefore by no means a proper Emblem for the brave and honest Cincinnati of America who have driven all the King birds from our Country...
I am on this account not displeased that the Figure is not known as a Bald Eagle, but looks more like a Turkey. For in Truth the Turkey is in Comparison a much more respectable Bird, and withal a true original Native of America... He is besides, though a little vain & silly, a Bird of Courage, and would not hesitate to attack a Grenadier of the British Guards who should presume to invade his Farm Yard with a red Coat on."

I have a question, and bare with me, do you eat your own eggs? If not, do you keep your chickens just as pets, and what do you do with your eggs?
No, vegan means no meat, no eggs, no milk. Not being mean, just explaining. BTW, I know this was posted ages ago, but I was away for ages.

I totally understand that. People always ask if I need a rooster to get eggs? I too want to quit my job and go live a on nice farm.....
