Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

On a sidenote, how cool would it be to have a chicken that was about 4' tall, something so big you could walk it on a leash like a dog? Wouldn't that just scare the holy crap out of those people?

I took a chicken on a leash to my sister's yard sale - mostly to see if anyone would stop to pet the chicken. Some do-gooder started asking me questions "you don't just keep it in that cage do you?" pointing at the travel cage. What I really wanted to say is, "why yes! And I never clean the cage and she has mites and lice, here hold her for a minute."

On the egg breed cockerel debate: Really the only way it would be feasable is if they were caponized, and can you imagine the response from your average consumer on that?

On funny stuff: I try and let my girls free range when I'm home, and since I'm on a major walking route they can get a lot of attention. I'm surprised how many people are FLOORED that they come in different colors. I have a lot of fun pointing out that not only are their colors different, but two have beards (EE's) and one has feathery feet (Light Brahma).

Had someone at work ask me if I eat the eggs. I said yes, of course! She said EWWWW! But those are YARD EGGS! My reply, So? She said But they're so dirty! And don't chickens stink? I asked her where the store eggs came from. She said yeah, they come from chickens, but they bleach them so they're nice and clean! My turn to say EWWWW!

lol Yeah, when we first got chickens, our original flock only had Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rocks, and Black and Red Sexlinks, and a family friend asked us "why don't you have any normal chickens?"

Growing up, Rhode Island Reds WERE the normal chickens, so I had no clue what she was talking about! lol Turns out she was expecting a flock of white chickens. To this day, I still only have one white hen.

When folks try to tell me storebought eggs are cleaner than farm raised, I lay a little science on them. They're shocked to realize how dirty eggs from battery farms can be.

I love to laugh about it afterward but I HATE having to grin and bear it when someone starts prattling on with that junk.

Last month it was, "I saw a hawk, therefore, ALL of your chickens are doomed and they will be eaten."

Keep in mind this person has never raised chickens, but apparently they are an expert and I am just a dumb novice.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I believe the culling of egg laying roosters isn't so much about it being done as it is HOW it's done. From my understanding, they are thrown live into a grinder and then made into dog food/cat food/ fertilizer?
if I'm wrong, someone please correct me.
I have no problems with the baby chick's being used for pet food, just wish there was a more humane way to kill them first.
I have been culling my cockerels as they make themselves known. A quick end and down the gullet of a snake. (I pluck the feathers because they make the poop stink SO bad!)
I don't have the space to raise these guys to butchering weight and feel that it is perfectly acceptable to use them as food for another animal. I feed my dogs raw rabbit that I've butchered, and maybe chickens too, if none of the snakes are hungry when a rooster let's himself be known.

I recently bought hatching eggs that were shipped to me.. upon arrival the post office had the box in a plastic garbage bag because it stunk so badly and was leaking.. several of the eggs had exploded and the rest were bad with large air cells.. when I contacted the seller they assured me that the eggs were good, that their ducks had been laying like crazy... when I asked about the size of the air cells and told him that a few had exploded in the box.. his reply was "those eggs are fresh. they were laid this year, 2014".. so I asked exactly when they had been laid... he said "oh sometime in January I think.. but they are still good for hatching"

keep in mind the box had not been lost in the mail.. and this is April...........
