Nope just normal sponges and whatnot. Doesn't matter right now because we have 21 chooks and ZERO eggs!

It is the middle of Winter there!

What chickens do you have?

It is funny the comments you must get about the hens not laying in the winter.

Look at the client base you've created: So the folks at work are now officially egg snobs?

I had a difficult time finding a source until I found out about a co-op that goes in together monthly to buy feed from Countryside. The organizer sends out an email, asking for orders and provides a projected delivery date. When the order is on its way, they email a statement. The feed is delivered (there's a minimum amount that has to be ordered to get them to send a truck ... most likely a pallet) to a grocery store parking lot in Franklin NC, which is in the western NC mountains, and near the GA state line. It's about an hour from me, so one guy halfway between picks up my feed with his own, and I drive 30 minutes to his house to get my order. He pays for both of us at the delivery site, and I repay him for my feed when I pick it up. Its worked like a charm, so far. At one time, there were a couple more people here in GA, so we would take turns picking it up in NC. But, I'm currently the only one in GA.

Check around on some local chicken boards, like your local poultry meetup group, and see if you can work something out. Even if you have to get 2-3 months worth at a time because of distance to a source, it would be worth it. Oh. I bet you could contact organic feed companies that supply to your area and see who carries the feed, too. I think I found such a site at Countryside one time. I use them because they're out of VA, so in my general region. But, let your fingers do some walking on the keyboard, and you'll most likely find something.

Good luck!

countryside is awesome. I actually have my own source for organic feed now but for a while I wasnt sure that I could get ahold of the person I get it from so I emailed countryside asking if it would be possible to get a sample of their feed. I never got a response but 3 days later I had a package in the mail. They sent me a 25 lb bag of their layer feed to try. I was really surprised. Definitely didn't expect so much!

This thread is a real hoot!

I work as a Massage Therapist and I have mentioned the Chicken project to a few of my regulars. I'm going back thru the thread here and reading all of it. Given that when most of those stupid questions would get asked about the chickens, my clients are on the table, well, I need to do it somewhat tactfully. You don't really want to offend somebody who may or may not be wearing only underwear.

Up to page 150 now, taking a break for tonight. Weather is threatening to storm here and it doesn't do much for my internet signal.

My friends dad told her not to get a roo because fertile eggs not only taste ' funny ' but they don't store as long as infertile. The scary thing is that her dad used to own a battery hen farm. So for 30+ years he's been telling anyone that would listen , " fertile eggs are no good ". :smack
