Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

I have friends who are Australian, and they have come to the US when the husband is on business, and they have repeatedly invited my husband and I to visit them in NSW. The truth is flying makes my Meniere's go bonkers, and I'm terrified I'd be staggering around and land on my rump on a Tiger snake. Those things terrify me.

Maybe some day we'll take a passenger-ferry to Australia.
Australia is great! except in summer, then practically everyone is terrified of fires. Including me. I won't go ANYWHERE in summer because i'm terrified the house will burn down when I'm away

Perhaps I can reassure you. I am an American (from Eugene, Oregon) who has been living in Australia for nearly 12 years. I've seen fewer than five snakes in that time. Most of them crossing the road (not including dead snakes on the road which would probably be closer to 50). Two of them were in nature reserves. One was in my yard. Every single one of the snakes I've encountered has fled in a panic.

Unless you're tromping around in tall grass in the summer you're fine. The vast majority of snake bites occur when people try to capture or kill a snake.

Frankly, if an animal in Australia is going to kill you - it's going to be a kangaroo hopping out in front of your car and totaling it ....or a tourist ignoring signs and wandering into a body of water with a croc in it. Though in NSW (where I live), crocs aren't a concern.
Hey, I live in NSW too! *high five* you know what I hate more than kangaroo's in front of cars? Dead kangaroo's and wallabies in the middle of the road. Its so sad it's a wonder they are not extinct, so many of them are hit -.-

Sometimes I seriously miss Eugene, but I love the way it is here. Honestly...what I miss most is Christmas in the winter. It just feels odd here.

That's the rule of thumb - don't walk in tall grass in the summer. Watch where you're putting your feet, etc. In the winter I'll let my little boy tromp about to his heart's content. Snakes are a lot more sluggish - summer's the dangerous period.
Also, don't lift up rocks and logs, they hind under those too.

Somewhat embarassed to admit it, but i used to be afraid of chickens as a small child. I stayed with my aunt a lot and she raised chickens and ducks. She always kept game chickens and one day i got too close to the hens and the top rooster chased me all the way from the barn into my aunt's living room. He slipped in before i shut the screen door.

I've only encountered one person who was legitimately afraid of chickens and i think it was a phobia of some sort. He was a sophomore in high school and was visiting a relative of mine that lives 2 houses down. He walked into the fenced in area my coop is in, panicked, and climbed over the fence in a mad dash. He was apparently too startled to remember the opening in the gate.
The only time I was ever afraid of a chicken was when my neighbours chickens escaped from their run, I was little so I grabbed one and put it in my lap. It was fine till it noticed my face and then It pecked me in the eye! It hurt so much

Dead wombats. ;_; I've still never seen a live wombat.

When I was a little girl, about 5/6, my grandpa had a mean rooster named Sue. That bird had it in for me! He would lie in wait and chase me trying to peck my legs! I was glad when Sue fell into the stew pot!

We had one that attacked my little brother. It became chicken and dumplings!

We only have two snake species here - European Viper (Vipera Berus) and the Grass snake (natrix natrix), the Viper being the only poisonous one of those, and even then, only really dangerous to people who are allergic to it. For most people the bite only gives you discomfort and swelling. But I've found that they are more prone to bite when it isn't that hot. In the sluggish state they aren't able to escape as easily, so they attack instead. When it's hotter, you usually don't even notice them, they just move out of the way.

The better half was actually bitten by one last summer at our cottage. She wen't out for a quick pee in the bush, and noticed a bit of a sting in her rear end while crouching. When she came in, it started throbbing, and she noticed a double puncture wound there. She took some hydrocortizone and had a bit of a hangoverlike feeling and a stiff leg the next day, but other than she was fine.
LOL sounds like my second hunting trip in Texas, It was about 3 am and i had to go so instead of going to the bathroom tent i just urinated by a bush about 4 yards away from my tent. Right when i started i heard the rattle i was like OH CRAP!! I looked down and there was a Eastern Diamondback right between my legs, I had no clue what to do i couldnt back away in fear i might get struck in the no no spot lol. So i called out to my uncle who was in a tent not to far away he came out to see what was wrong and quickly graved his S&W 44 cal. He told me just hold still then i really got scared because he wasnt that great of a shot, I just closed my eyes and said a little prayer as he shot the snake. Tell you what we had a good breakfast that morning that Eastern weighed 8 pounds after it was field dressed.

My eggs were in my refrigerator and one day a relative of mine came over to see the chickens and after we were done looking at them I asked her if she wanted to take a dozen eggs home. She said yes so I got them out of a refrigerator and she told me that now that she had fresh eggs she was going to try to have a chick (at the time I didn't even have a rooster) So I said good luck with that and let her go on her merry way. (she never had the chick) Lol
