Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

I told my father in law I am keeping a rooster, his response "well I won't be eating the eggs then fertilized eggs are bad!" Lol, the man has been a farmer his whole life and they had laying hens when he was growing up

Later I was talking to my mother in law, I mentioned what FIL said when she asked what I will do with all the eggs.
Her "well will the rooster be in his own area?"
Me "umm, no. Fertilized eggs are no different than unfertilized eggs unless you incubate them."
Her "well won't you be surprised when you crack one open and find an embryo!"
Me "unless a hen sits on it or you incubate it, that's not possible, it doesn't just spontaneously happen"

And she used to be a teacher! They are wonderful people but there is no changing their minds when they have their minds set on something. Oh well, more eggs for me!

You might ask FIL why, if fertilized eggs are no good, why grocery stores are allowed to sell them. If he says they aren't, take him to a Trader Joes if you have one, or a health food store if you don't. You also might tell him my mother ate fertile eggs all her life. She died at 90. They couldn't have been too bad for her.

You are right about not being able to change people's minds though. I had an uncle who insisted all our fresh milk was imported from Japan. He didn't see any dairies around where he lived so therefore milk had to come from Japan. There was no convincing him otherwise.

FarmAndCountry: I have heard that exact same statement so many times since my first hens started laying... last Saturday!!!I think the count is at around 12 or more times...

My mother in law also doesn't want fertalized eggs, so we lie to her. She also thought eggs became fertilized when a rooster came over and sat on them for a while. We tried explaining chicken reproduction but I don't think she believed it, so we just tell her these eggs weren't sat on by a rooster.

Also when we first started raising them she said that chickens were dirty and carried diseases and would make us sick. I asked her why she ate chicken if that was the case and she said store chicken was safe because they treated it with chemicals to kill the diseases.
