Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

Thankew! My girls lay some pretty good sized eggs. I'm very proud of them.

So far we've only had eggs from our SS Hamburgs. They lay religiously, but the eggs aren't so large. I'm waiting for our newest flock to start laying (13 weeks old right now) to see the difference between light breed layers and heavy. Can't wait to see the difference!

Is the egg from the black australorp round?

I get some very elongated eggs and I thought they were from my black Australorps.

I also get some almost round dark brown ones, but I have no idea who is giving me that egg.



Here is my last 3 days worth of eggs, I have started sorting them by color, Some people think the colored eggs are not as tasty or inedible, This way people can pick the color eggs they want.

A woman I sell eggs too gave a dozen to a co-worker to try fresh eggs. The woman threw them away because they were off colored.

I can't believe someone would throw colored eggs out, but I guess it takes all kinds. What a terrible waste of good eggs.

Pretty eggs! They look a lot like mine. My Australorp's eggs look like your dark ones and are round in shape. My EE's, past and present, lay pointier eggs. The humongous one I showed you earlier is from my EE, Betty, and is very elongated and pointy.

As for the "off colored" eggs, as we've noted here before, you just can't fix stupid ..... even with a 2 x 4. I suppose it's a good thing people don't see their beef before it's processed, or else they'd be looking for white cows only. Jeez.

An egg is an egg is an egg. When are people going to learn that. Size of egg may determine the amount of yolk and/or water in the egg. Color however is just color. This kind of ignorance is how stores get away with charging more for brown eggs. Want to see some really big eyes, give a child a green egg and tell them it is for Green Eggs and Ham. They love the concept and it helps get their parents over the color determines quality myth.

Funny you all are talking about green eggs because we had a friend over yesterday and when I came in from feeding the chickens I showed him a green egg & I said "Look, rotten egg". He said "Wow! I'd say!" Then I educated him

. I can't wait until spring to have a color palette like @duluthralphie . Those are gorgeous! About the dark ones, do you have Marans or Welsummers? They lay very dark eggs like that.

I bought a mixed package of colored egg layers this spring, they just started laying a few weeks ago.

White Rock
Delaware
Black Australorp
Black Sex Link
Red Sex Link
RIR
Production reds
Dixie rainbows.
Barred rock

That I know of the package was from Hoover's hatchery in Rudd Iowa

It was really heavy with EEs. Those listed are the ones I identified. The Delaware came from a different source.

I think the darkest ones are from the black Australorps. I get one egg that is long and looks like a snake egg. No idea where it comes from. BUT I have not gotten it lately so it might have been a misshaped poult egg.

From experience, I can tell you that Barred Rocks lay a large, medium-tan egg, fairly round. I've had 2 Australorps - one laid an egg just like the Barred Rock, and the current one lays that darker brown egg I posted earlier. Both are fairly round eggs. The only long, pointed eggs I've ever gotten are from EEs. I've also noticed that they start out laying smaller eggs that increase in size after a few months. Then, after their first moult, they come back even bigger. At least, that what my girls have done.

Don't know if this helps at all, but hope you'll soon figure it out. Take some reading material down to the hen house with a cup of coffee and, when they go in to lay, keep an eye out. When somebody comes out singing, the warmest egg will be hers. It's the only way to really identify who's laying what. If there is more than one hen laying at a time, note who's in which box, too. Sounds nuts but, for chicken wranglers, it's a pleasant way to spend a morning.

ETA: Oh, yeah. I think all (Plymouth) Rocks lay the same color egg; only their feather colors/patterns are different. I have a Partridge Rock, and her eggs are just like the Barred Rock's.

I never thought of coffee and reading material and watching...I just stand ands stare at them, and they look at me like I am invading their privacy.

I am glad to here you EE eggs were small. We call them our large Robin eggs they are so small.



BTW one barred rock was a very bad little girl last night. I lock the birds up right after dark. They have a covered run they can go into if they want out real early. I let them out to free range around 9:30 each morning after I have gotten most the eggs. This morning I am enjoying my coffee and the bad little Barred Rock is walking down the driveway. Obviously she did not go into the coop last night! Bad Girl!
