Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

I have no problem dealing with a normal ignorant person, we are all ignorant on one subject or another, it is people like this that refuse to acknowledge they are ignorant that get to me..



People that think they know everything really bother those of us that do know everything..

I got yard eggs recently and one had a green yolk, and I still didn't pitch a fit. I took a picture, tossed the egg, and moved on with my life.

A deal? He's right - $24/dozen is pretty pricey for hatching eggs, unless you've got something really special (maybe you do, I don't know). You can get hatched out chicks for $2 a piece at most feed stores - and there are a bunch of people on craigslist near you selling hatching eggs in the .50/per range. We have a big chicken festival down here in the spring, and I can get BCM chicks for $2 a piece, and if I wait till the end of the day, get them for less than $1/each. Are you sure you're not overshooting your market?

BCM hatching eggs are going for $20/dozen here so I wouldn't call them pricey at $24/dozen.The only breeds that I have seen go for as little as $0.50 each are very common laying breeds such as RIR, Barred Rock, Leghorn, etc. The hatcheries I looked at have straight run BCM chicks priced at $7.00+ each (Cackle, Meyer, MPC). It is true that you can get chicks cheap through feed stores but it is not for everyone. The only feed store that sells chicks around where I live is Tractor Supply and they only order from Mt. Health Hatchery. This hatchery has a limited amount of breeds, none of which I am interested in. I also like to hatch much earlier in the season than when the feed stores have chicks available. If I were in the market for BCM eggs, I would have no problem paying $24/dozen and for show quality stock I would pay even more..

Im a little brain dead now....a lady who bought five dozen eggs two days ago just drove up in my driveway, FURIOUS.

She almost THROWS cartons of eggs at me and demands I look at them.

So I do. Low and behold....exactly what I put in the carton.

So I asked what the issue was, making her even MORE angry with me.

Her: YOU said these were FRESH eggs!
Me: They are....three dozen were collected less than an hour before you picked them up and the other two dozen were from the day before....
Her: LIAR! LOOK AT THOSE BLUE EGGS!

So I pick one up, looking for a hairline crack I might have missed or some blemishand find nothing. so I look at the next few scattered throughout the cartons and same deal.

Me: What's wrong with the blue ones?
Her: YOU FROZE THOSE EGGS AND SOLD THEM AS "FRESH". YOU LIAR.

I explained egg color to her and told her I have a duck that lays a charcoal gray egg as well. Not pleased, she continued throwing a fit. I finally told her she could take the eggs or leave them, but I do not offer refunds unless there is something wrong with the egg. No crack, no refund.

I think I may have lost a customer. O.O

What is wrong with people??? I would have probably called the police on her! I can't stand people who act like two-year-olds and won't listen to reason. Good for you for standing your ground about the refund

Not to mention the cost of shipping. Also, Mt Healthy has repeatedly, year after year been in the news for their Salmonella infections in their chicks. Not saying that other hatcheries don't have the same problem, but Mt. Healthy is under the magnifying glass.

Didn't she even look at those eggs before she bought them?? Who buys eggs without checking them???

It doesn't matter what "you" would pay for hatching eggs - it matters what your local market will pay when you're selling on craigslist. The fact that you're getting snarky emails from said local market about your prices is a sign that your prices may be higher than that market can bear. People typically don't send that sort of feedback unless you're way off - and looking at the Philly craigslist, .50-1.00 seems to be the going rate.

The fact that your birds are rare, or special only matters if people in the local market not only know that, but care.

Straight run chicks are worth a lot more than hatching eggs - they're the best case from hatching eggs, and already have almost a month of work invested.

 I keep a running ad on craigslist for eggs.

I understand, I live a little off the beaten path and it can be inconvenient for people to drive here for eggs. I have brought eggs to town to meet people if I am going to town for something else.

Yesterday, I got an email requesting eggs from a potential new egg customer. She said she would take 3 dozen eggs ( I sell them at 2.50 a dozen) if I met her on Saturday in town, which is 15 miles one way from here.

Then she went on to say if the chickens are fed non-GMO organic feed only.  All this for $2.50!

I think I failed customer service, I wrote her back I would not drive 15 miles one way for 7 bucks under any circumstance. Furthermore, If I could guarantee my cage free  chickens that free range everyday and are only locked in a coop at night ( My chickens are drug and medication free) ate only non-GMO organic fed I would charge her 15 dollars a dozen and still not drive 15 miles one way to get them to her....

One thing about being older retired and raising chickens for fun and not profit is my freedom to tell off the person that irritates me. ( she irritated me).....

Anyway maybe not the dumbest thing anyone said, but one of the more irritating things.

Unfortunately, the people who frequent CL aren't typically looking for quality; they're the ones who are looking to get something for nothing. Know thy audience.

That's probably true in the USA too.Store food need to be USDA inspected..what the one lady meant that was against the law.
Also looked it up..pasturizing just kills some bacteria Not all to keep the milk lasting longer..that's about it!
I've bought many hatching eggs from eBay and BYC cant remember when they were less than $24 with shipping.Most of mine are not sold much locally often if at all.But I imagine about $15 without Still your paying $24. Either way...plus if she has special chickens many ppl really hate to buy shipped eggs( including me) so if she's selling at$24 then there is a market.If nobody buys then too high.And if nobody sells that breed near her she has a corner on the market there. People will pay.I would if they were a breed or color I was looking for..some people don't think to look at Craig's for a breed they want or are afraid of Craig's.
