Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

I went to a petting zoo with my little cousins (and even though I hate being "that person" who tells you your Naked Necks are horribly ill) I had to tell the lady there how d'Uccle was pronounced.

Marketing - Marketing - Marketing
It's awesome what a few chickens can teach you when you are willing to get your hands dirty and work. Dirty hands equal clean coops.
As a former city kid I also thought brown eggs were healthier. When they were first introduced to our grocery store they were labeled as "farm" and "fresh". Cartoons of chickens sitting on straw filled nests adorned the boxes. (not chickens stacked on top each other in cages) We really felt like we were getting something different and because it was fresh, it MUST be healthier!
After working in some food processing plants and finding out how the only difference in some butters - between the generic brand and the high dollar brand was the label on the box, I started to wise up.
I also learned there is no "butter" in most of them. It's flavored oil.
Marketing has a terrible influence on they way food tastes. The brain is a powerful influence on tastebuds. Cartoon pictures must taste good!
I homestead now and we grow, process and store 90% of all our food.
I have shared my farm foods with my family only to receive disappointing feedback. I kept trying, offering, being "so very generous" and sharing just to realize that if they aren't educated in the work, health benefits and the labor involved - they will never "get it".
Perhaps no one "tastes the pride" in what I do… but it happens to be my favorite flavor in each and every dish.
It has taken me 5 years to quit trying to rope my friends and family into the "real" side. I'm tired of getting my feelings hurt and it's not worth giving my hard work away to people who just don't appreciate it. It's a shame. I'm thankful that I can come here and post with people who have the same experiences. I always feel like I am doing something awesome sharing - and they Just. Don't. Get it.
There is so much independence, glory and pride in poultry. Don't beat yourself up trying to convert food zombies. They will come clamoring when they get sick (like I did) or when food gets too expensive… until then… enjoy yourself! Eat up! Your the chef who knows ALL of the ingredients!!

FarmTillURdead,
awesome awesome awesome to be an 8 year survivor! what you put in... is what you get out...and you have got the key to your survival in your "dirty' hands! I have celiac, it's a digestive malabsorption disorder, so I can't eat wheat, barley, rye or anything made from those... so I can't eat most traditional baked goods or processed store bought food. My point: I deliver the mail in a farming county. in the first year, I was offered so many different homemade cakes and things, sometimes it was easier to just take it, say thanks... and give it to someone else, but it eventually got around that I can't eat that stuff... I always have my own little garden with various veg and fruits, but in the last 5 or so years, my route families have given me so much incredible food, that I don't have to grow the standard fare anymore. I have started concentrating on herbs and such, and share them back with everyone. I just love to open a mailbox and find a big bag with fresh assorted veg! I have even been given fresh pasture raised meats - I cannot eat beef from the grocer any more, it is so fatty and soft and tastes funny in comparison... I can see, on their faces, the pride, the joy, the determination, the hard work, the love... that goes into all of it. I never go anywhere (for real) without a camera, and there are so many lovely ladies who just don't want their pic taken while working in their gardens, bc they are "dirty"... I just laugh and say "your beautiful!, there is nothing more beautiful than hard work, and love of the earth", I haven't been turned down for a photo yet!
As long as you don't allow them to discourage you (which you don't) you are sure to have many more years of sifting earth through your fingers!

I don't get that. Hamburger is just ground beef - usually chuck (shoulder) or round (rump). It's actual muscle, not miscellaneous stuff. Perhaps she was thinking hot dogs? Best burgers I ever had were 75% lean ground chuck and 25% ground brisket.

At the butcher shop I work at hamburger is made out of any piece of meat that doesn't classify as a cut(meat between ribs, or cuts that the customer doesnt want like stew or brisket etc) and any trimmings off of other cuts.

As to stupidest comment I ever got was back in Highschool. I supplied all our teachers with eggs on the weekly bases but one. At first she was thrilled to take the first dozen but the next day she brought them back with a few missing saying the yolks are too yellow, she cant eat that thats not natural to have that colour! She said she threw up after she saw how yellow they were.......
She said she will go back to eating normal store eggs since they have proper looking yolks(anemic almost white yolk is proper? really?).

Seriously, why would anyone ever be that rude? If she didn't like them, she could have just said a simple "thank you, but I won't be needing any more. It was kind of you to offer." But to tell you she threw up from just seeing them? That goes beyond stupid and straight to rude!

"no eggs for YOU!"
