Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

Well the husband takes this one. We returned from vacation yesterday to find on of my chickens half dead from dehydration and starvation (long story) I did have 2 pet sitters. anyway, after giving her electrolytes and watching her drink for 20 minutes straight until she threw up and after watching her eat for over 2 hrs straight, of course I was beside myself that people could leave and animal to suffer in this 95' heat with no food or water and the husband says " She didn't suffer. Animals don't suffer, they are not like people it's a scientific fact. I don't know why you are so upset, she's still alive isn't she?" Well...needless to say he slept on the couch last night and I am ready to throw his butt out onto the street. HONESTLY !!!!!! and you think you know someone....

My first ex-husband thought a pony was a baby horse. When my daughter became a vegetarian, he thought she would die if she didn't eat meat. When the insulation in the water heater caught fire, he *insisted* I call the plumber.

He also assumes he's a genius and everyone else is an idiot.

The people who say animal don;t feel anything (be it pain or otherwise) really make my blood boil!

Another one that annoys and shocked me the first time I heard it is when I'm told that animals were PUT on this planet to provide us with with food. No, eggs are not there for reproduction, their sole purpose is FOOD. Say, what?! And how on earth did chickens survive for this long?!
Cows' only purpose in life is to provide humans with milk. No, they're not trying to rear calves...

I have ever since avoided having conversations with the lady who first said that to me, which is a shame, because she was otherwise nice. I just can't get my head around how someone could be so completely selfish. I imagine it's a bit like having someone insist the world is flat. You just give up.

I'm with you, Time-Out. Crazy heaps of selfishness and inability to empathize aside, asserting that an animal can't feel pain is just plain silly and ill-thought out. If an animal couldn't feel pain, it'd be a failed organism and nature would discard it as a dead-end very quickly. How could it tell when it was experiencing cell damage? How could it be motivated to prevent damage to itself long enough to reproduce? Why would it even care if a predator attacked it? So what, not like it hurts to be eaten. Ho hum.

Also, the same part of the nervous system that regulates the sensation of pain in vertebrates also regulates body temperature. In humans, children born with the genetic condition of being unable to feel pain also have the severe handicap of being unable to sweat. Their bodies don't know that they need to, and they overheat very quickly. Mortality is high. This is why extreme temperatures HURT. Too cold? Ouch. Too hot? Ouc.
Pain is not a human virtue, but an evolutionary tool that almost all organisms share. It's a very basic body function that tells you 'hey stupid, take care of yourself'. It's excessively conceited and uninformed to assume otherwise.

Oh boy! - if an animal didn't feel pain then all that barbed wire and those electric fences wouldn't work the way we intended. People have half thoughts ...don't quite think things through and have a good ability to leave out information that doesn't conform to their desires. I tell my kids that people LIKE to lie to themselves ..they argue with me a bit but there's no simpler way to put it.

I like that and agree completely...I think my husband just thinks ( well, animals ARE way different than we are, that's a fact) that since they are so different, they don't feel pain and suffering just the same as we do, I can agree with that part but to say that they don't feel much if any pain and don't suffer much from dehydration and starvation is just idiotic, un-empathetic and ignorant....my blood is still boiling!

Since (animals) are so different, they don't feel pain and suffering just the same as we do

Ever accidentally step on the paw or tail of a dog or cat? If it isn't painful, why do they yelp?

People *want* to believe animals don't feel pain to ease their own consciences. I swear, the more I know about some people, the more I love my animals.

Ruby the only living chicken of the 8 we first bought has lived a bad life with me. That whole learning curve thing. We got them and they lived pretty good in the house until the DH got the coop and run built. First day in the coop and run my son stepped on her foot and broke it. We not knowing anything about the care of a broken chicken foot called the vet and were told she will live or die. Umm OK! So she hopped around on one foot for a week or so. Then the dog attack. She lived through that. Then the gate was left open and she lived through being picked off by more dogs thanks to Big Bird the rooster. Now that we have the learning curve figured out she is a happy chicken. People do not understand animals even chickens have close bonds and feel pain. I showed a friend how Big Bird takes care of his ladies. She was amazed a bird of all things had the ability to do this behavior.

As for the newest one here I was asked if turkeys laid eggs. I told them yes but my BBW's can not breed naturally. Had to explain the whole AI thing to them.
