Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

Eggs can last months in a cool place (like 50 degrees) or many weeks in warmer temps. Simple thing to do is see if the egg floats in water. If it does, then it shouldn't be eaten anymore (however, this only means it has dried out and has a large air bubble, not necessarily that it has gone bad, but the idea is that it might have bacteria making gasses inside)

I collect chicken and duck eggs and I had two "silly" Reactions.

Every other Sunday when we have a brekfast potluck at our church, I naturally bring an egg dish. I will sometimes use duck eggs, sometimes I use chicken eggs, and I have even used both in one dish. When one of the ladies found out I had ducks she said, "I hope your not using your duck eggs in those egg dishes of yours. Duck eggs can be poisonous you know."
My jaw dropped right infront of her and I couldn't even hide my reaction.

The other thing I found was amussing is that people swore I was using duck eggs when I really had used chicken eggs and then vice versa. I even live in a small town farming community but they are so "unaware" to what life really has going on.

Oh silly people.

I've got a silly question-- are duck eggs like chicken eggs? I mean do the females lay eggs without male intervention?
I have cockatiels, and even they will lay eggs w/out a male. About once a year. they all get hormonal, so to speak. No more details but all birds lay eggs, and all birds are able to lay eggs w/out a male around. It's just that with those not normally considered "fowl" they don't usually lay eggs unless there is a male involved to sort of get them in the mood. Plenty of parrot owners know, however, that female birds are every bit as inventive as females of other species and get in the mood and lay with no males. Even those that lay once a year.

Like so many of us, I've had my share of "do hens lay eggs without a rooster around" questions. I thought I had come up with the perfect explanation: comparing a hen's egg production to a human female's monthly ovulation "even without a man around." First time I used this explanation and it will be the last...the man I was talking to got this horrified expression on his face and said "are you trying to say that women make eggs? What do you do with them??" You don't know how badly I wanted to say that we cook them for breakfast. This guy was in his late 20s, early 30s. Dear lord, I hope he doesn't reproduce...

Ok, the people who think the eggs from the store are "clean" should see pictures of the dirty, crowded, disgusting conditions where those poor factory farm hens live.

That's the real reason I wanted to get chickens since I was 18 and saw the conditions egg layers were put in at the local college. Those hens were in individual cages with wire floors and I thought that was so awful, now-a-days, it's just so awful, it's hard to think about it. And I'm not a big animal rights person, imo, I just think all creatures should be respected and given a decent life, even if it's a life meant to feed us.

Well, today i was with my Barnevelder cockeral and my little sister (7) came up to me and said:

Her: "So hes a boy?"

Me: "Yes He is!!"

Her: "Does that mean he was born by a rooster?" :hmm

Me: **FACEPALM**

My sister is so weird..
