Dumor or Blue Seal

I don't know. I keep my chickens' feeder full constantly, same with their water. The flock I noticed the difference in free ranged in my yard everyday and sometimes had some scraps from the kitchen. They didn't get much scratch, I put some oyster shell in their feed a couple times a week. Just typical chicken care. Also when I switched feeds, I got more eggs--some started laying everyday. I don't know if that was a coincidence or not.

If you live near Woodford Feed in Versailles, you should try their feed sometime. It's cheaper than TSC and I really think it's better quality. Their chick feed is fresh ground at the store and only $5 for 25 pounds, and their layer feed is Homestead brand. It's only $11 for 50 pounds. They also sell food grade DE there in 50 pound bags.

The first batch of chicks I raised from babies--I had 8 chicks--they ate through a 50 pound bag of Dumor chick starter in no time. Right now I'm raising 14 chicks (in winter instead of summer like the last batch) and they are a month old but still have at least 1/3rd of a 25 pound bag of the fresh ground starter from the feed store left!

Thanks for the info. I live over toward Etown and will have to do a search for Versailles. I like the idea of fresh ground feed for the chickens. Also I wish I knew about the DE. I ordered a 50lb bag back in the summer and paid almost the same to ship it as it cost.

I've been using Dumor until now and yes they have had smelly poo. I hope the switch to blue seal helps with that.

I'm a Dumor disliker too. The poo is stinky and larger, I think. They ate way more of it than the Purina I'm using now and from the amount of poo, I question the conversion value.

Did I mention that my horse lived for 37 years? No joke. Always on Blue Seal

I started with Blue Seal because that's what my feed store gave me as a total newbie, and I really like it. There is virtually no dusty waste and it has a wonderful fresh smell. The girls eat it happily.

Don't want to hijack this thread, but I have a question. I have used Dumor, local organic mash & Purina. I never noticed a difference in poop smell etc. Many here use Purina, but doesn't it bother you that the tag doesn't list specific grains used?? The tag actually has "grain by-products" as the first ingredient BEFORE "mixed grains". Why doesn't Purina have to list the types of grains? I am back on Purina at the moment, but it still has a "beer smell" although not as strong as other times. My chickens are all healthy, but I would prefer a food that lists ingredients. Mixed grains doesn't tell me much. Haven't used Dumor for awhile, does that tag list grains? The local organic mash lists all the grains used. Seems like it should be a requirement. Thanks.

I think Dumor did list the grains? I can't remember. It had a big long ingredient list. I don't like Purina because it's a part of Nestle, it would make sense that they wouldn't bother to list the grains.
