Dumpster Diving-Garage Sale-Goodwill-Thrift Store & Craigslist Finds

My thrifting trip was OK, but not stellar. I got a pair of black jeans, a silk Talbots sweater and a couple other summer things. Spent $29, but had a gift card for 25 of that. Then I went to the more upscale consignment store next door & got 2 sweaters (1 is LL Bean) a scarf and a pair of Sanita clogs for $30 all together. I have really good luck at that store finding unworn brand name shoes on super sale. Last year I got a pair of leather mary janes by El Naturalista. Later I looked them up on Zappos.com - they're $130 shoes.

Sounds stellar to me! :thumbsup

Jackpot! :thumbsup

I found an oak computer table someone left at a dumpster at a storage unit. The top was rough, but I'll smooth it off and put formica on it and use it for a clay table.

I used to get plants on the cheap at Lowes all the time when I worked there... actually I got a ton of stuff on the cheap. Ceiling fan displays, $5 ea! Got several 800$ 8x10 rugs for 25$ ea! a full pallet of 6" natural tumbled marble for 140$ that would have been over 1000$, my linoleum for the bathroom, was a mistake special order (that was the same style as I was going to pick, just a different color) but I got it for 1/2 the price. That's about the only thing I miss about being there! I brought something home every week!

Bought a fake decorative tree to brighten up the basement family room. Thrift store for $12.50. And it was hung with Christmas tree lights lol!

I love craigslist and my local freecycle group to. Off the top of my head I have got plastic privacy slats fencing that you put in the chain link fence. I had to take about 1/4 of it out of the fence when I picked it up but the rest was on the ground in a pile. My barn was deteriorating and I got 3/4 of the wood and supplies off a guy on craigslist that refurbed trailers so we both recycled. I always get our family clothing off freecycle or craiglist for free. I have got free furniture all kinds. Sometimes there is free food on craigslist nothing wrong with it. I got a 100 gallon aquarium with stand and hood on craigslist once! I think the best thing I ever got for free on craigslist is my 3 lb chihuahua and lionhead bunny....I love them so much! I check the ads regularly!

My best freebie from craigslist was one of those double-sided signs on wheels that you slide the big letters into to write your message. It was a big hit at our BBQ/party that weekend! Passed it on for free the next week!

The above moose is my favorite free find from about ten years ago when I worked at Target. He was the display model and I kept asking whatever happened to him and one day one of the women I worked with told me she rescued it from the trash for me. I am obsessed with anything moose-y so I was thrilled. I think he sold for like 99 bucks new. They throw a lot of stuff away at Target and you aren't really allowed to take anything out of the trash. We've seen them throw away perfectly good bikes and tons of other stuff that could be used. The worst part is they put it all in a huge trash compactor.

I used to go thrifting with my mom in law but since she's passed I don't have a partner. Recently I found a like new Phillies jersey for my daughter for $15 and they retail for like 60 bucks. But yeah, that moose is my absolute favorite and it was free. For the holidays I put clip on lights around the outline of his entire body and he looks awesome.

Around here you can put out bulk trash any time and we have two trash days a week so a lot of people go picking. The desk I'm using now was a trash find, solid wood old child's desk, but I keep my puter on it. It's very shabby chic. I love free stuff.

Oh yeah, and I'll admit it, I'm a borderline hoarder.

Haven't done any serious looking lately as I have two younguns that won't tolerate it quite yet.

But the best find I've had so far is a pair of International Silver candlesticks. One was in the "valuables" area of a thrift store and marked at $7 and its mate was in the general home furnishings area and marked at $0.50. They were black with tarnish, but they buffed out to a mirror finish. I also found an International Silver candy tray for a dollar. That find was extra special to me because it just so happened to be the exact design as a pair of candy dishes that I had recently inhereted from my grandmother after she passed.

We'll be moving soon to a much larger house and I am going to be scouring the estate sales/thrift stores and Craigslist to get some nice solid furniture to populate it with. Can't wait.
