dungeons and dragons? *newbie needs help*

I've been gaming for quite a few years, starting with AD&D, but played just about every version of that system, as well as things like GURPS, Star Trek, Alternity, Mage, etc. I suggest you pick up Pathfinder, it's an offshoot of D&D 3.5, which was a version that was easy to learn, but Pathfinder improved on it. Not only that, but the basic book http://www.amazon.com/Pathfinder-Roleplaying-Game-Core-Rulebook/dp/1601251505 has all the information you need to play OR run a game, unlike D&D where you need to buy a book to play, and a separate book to DM (dungeon master).

If you can, find a local comic/gaming store and ask the employees if they run a pathfinder game, or know of any ongoing games that are looking for a new player. It's VERY helpful to have an experienced group to explain how things work, just picking up the book and seeing all those rules at once can be pretty intimidating.

sadly no comic books stores around hear -_-

i would like to keep to DnD or forgotten realms (unsure yet, just trying to find out the main books i will need)

See the thing is, D&D is now up to 4th edition, and it's NOTHING like how D&D used to be. Pathfinder is actually more true to it, and it has the bonus of still being "active". Wizards of the Coast bought out D&D, and since they're a profit-driven machine, they feel the need to dump old versions of D&D and make up new (crappy) ones so that people will keep spending more and more money on it. Pretty much every group I know that tried out 4th ed. hates it, and when they lit onto Pathfinder they glommed onto it. The bonus is, if you find any D&D modules that are in the 3.5 rules, they'll work fine in Pathfinder.
