Dust bath

We had some construction sand left over from a garage build. I had the hubby make a rectangle shaped "bottomless box" made out of 2x4's and placed it in the run. Filled it with the construction sand and they love it! As the grass decomposes it will be all dirt but i'll keep adding the sand as they throw it out LOL

Interesting, there must be something wrong with my chickens lol. So I live in the pacific northwest. My birds get out to free range every day, but we get a fair bit of rain so I built them a roofed over dust bath area. All was well when I had mostly just dirt in it, but I dumped a bag of sand in it because I had heard sand was great for chickens to dust bath in. Guess what, now they won't use it. Removing some of the sand is on tomoorows list of things to do. But how wierd.

Can I make a dust bath out of sand only or do I need to add something else?

I have cut off about a foot of a plastic 45 gallon barrel. Then I put a combination of dirt from my garden and wood ashes in it for the chickens to dust bathe in. I find the wood ashes wards off parasites.

Looking ar getting one in our new chicken area. Do they not poop in the sand, or did you just clean it out regularly?

I put sifted dirt and ash from my wood stove in there, when they were younger there was more poop but now hardly ever to I find poop in the dust bath. The tubby thingy is their dust bath.
