I put a tire filled with dirt and sand into my 5 week olds run. No one even went to check it out.

My girls were doing the dust dance in their brooder at about 5 days old (on a towel, really ineffective!). I put a little glass baking dish in there with about 1/2" of 30 grit, washed/screened/kiln-dried construction sand, and they love it. All of them walk through it as often as possible, and I've witnessed one dustbath in person, and I've seen sand on the backs of the others, so I think they're all gettin' down with their bad selves in there. They also eat a lot of it, even though I paid decent money for real chick grit. Go figure.
