Dust bath???

Not sure what forum to put this on. In my girls run the ground is too hard to be able to dust bathe the way they should. I have one of those large green turtles that are children's sand boxes that my nephew and niece had, which I am going to turn into the dust bath area for my 12 chickens. Can I use children's play sand and mix some wood ash from my pellet stove? Or what should I use? 8 like to dust bathe together so I figured the turtle would be a great size and plus repurposed it.
