Personally, ours enjoy dirt, sand, and a bit of wood ash. Some folks put DE and herbs in there too.

But if not a mix of sand soil would work!

My girls are enjoying sand, and a mix of gravel and woodshavings. They also love the leaves, but it's only been a day with my new flock so it was rushed mind

I do the play sand because it’s a cleaner sand...I’m hoping better for their lungs..and the wood ash. They love it.

What is your set-up like? Mine just dig holes in the dirt. If they have access to dirt you don't need to do anything. But that may not be viable for you. Are you talking about in the coop or in the run? What do they look like? What are you working with?

I have a sand run over the natural dirt ground. My Birds dig holes to dust bath in. Also they dust bath in the pine shavings in the Coop.

We use half sifted wood ash and half peat moss with a bit of sand added. The plastic kid's pool gets turned over and raked flat about every other day. The girls also use sunny parts of the run on occasion as well.
