My chicks are now 12 weeks old. Intheir brooder box they dust bathed in shavings. They are now out in a dirt run - I have put sand and ash in a container for them but they don’t seem interested, nor do they dust bathe in the earth. I thought I might add shavings as thats what they had first. Any thoughts?

they also do not seem very interested in garden worms or bugs. I was digging up the run for them today and found quite a lot. One or two of the girls ate them but I was surprised they weren’t more interested. I raised them from day old chicks so they didn’t have mum to guide them. Any input gratefully received. Thank you!

They'll figure it out. Last summer I caught a bunch of Japanese Beetles and thought the chickens would love them. Eh, not so much... Then one pullet tried eating one... then she ate almost all of them. After that, they came running when I had the "bug jar."

my chickens wont use their dust bath, they eat the sand, they scratch the sand but never take a bath. On occasion they will bathe in the run in the dirt, i have used wood ash, to no avail. So, I decided that they can take a bath when they want, if they want.

Could you just mix the wood ash in their bathing holes?
