Is commercially available potting/growing soil generally safe for quail? Or do I have to read the label to find out what it is fertilized with? I haven't found diatomaceous earth in any shop (and I'm not really keen on it because it's too fine). My quail love the soil from my garden, but it's getting harder to dig around in the garden now (I live in Canada) and I'm also running out of fresh soil (because I put the poopy soil back in the garden).

Suggestions for cheap, somewhat long-lasting, safe material for quail baths??

Thank you!

Don't use potting or growing soil. You never know just what they put in it. DE isn't safe either, it can get in their delicate lungs, and your's too. Safer alternatives are play sand, pure peat moss, shavings, and saw dust (make sure it's not from pressure treated wood).
