I think the important part is that it stays dry, mine have a couple spots in the yard they like to have a dust bath in (besides the tomatoes buckets that they took over)

I don't have a spot set up for them that's stays dry currently but will get one in place before winter hits (ugg that's just around the corner). After a rain things have dried out quick so I have not worried about it yet

I set up a spot under the coop with sand and they don't like it, so I'm going to add the dirt that's in the tomatoe buckets. I'm thinking this spot should stay dry (I'll save one bucket incase under the coop get wet/snowy that way they have a dry place to have a dust bath). I don't think they like the sand to dust bath in
