My 9 girls are still in their brooder inside my heated shop and the dust is INCREDIBLE!

Is there a different litter, other than the pine, that will be less dusty?
I know that when they get into their coop it will be less of an issue but I also have mild asthma and I am afraid it will be an issue later.

What you're getting is mostly CHICKEN dust (dander and flecks of feather shafts as they molt out to new feathers), not so much the bedding dust. Although some brands (or lots) of shavings can certainly be dustier than others.

They will always be rather dust, but what you're experiencing now is about the worst it gets -- once they have their adult feathers in and are no longer molting constantly, it does get *somewhat* less dusty.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

If it makes you feel better, does anyone ever listen? We just keep her advise in the back of our minds for future use to give our children.

Then we are the ones that are always right.

I'm glad to hear the dust gets better. I'm keeping my chicks in the basement and it is terrible right now too, you are not alone.

I've never found a solution to the dust

. I love my chickens so I tolerate their dust but their coop has been in my garage for the past 10 yrs and I need to get them to the barn, instead. It's just convenient to have them so close, especially on a cold winter's night.

I plan to get them out to the coop this week although the weather has not been cooperating . We are still getting lows in the 30's, they are mostly feathered, just one slow one left. I'm wondering if they are big enough to handle the coop with only the brooder light. Next time I get chicks I will remember to drape the motorcycles and everything else for that matter!
Notice I said next time!
