Dust

Is it the chickens themselves that create the dust? or is it just the bedding they are in and the fact that they kick it around all the time.

Yeah! I think all of the above.

I think it is the sheath from the feathers as they grow out that create the dust.

The shavings definitely add much to the mix. I am buying most of our shavings from the local feed mill but I really have less dust with coarse shavings from TSC. The local feed mill's shavings are a tad more dusty. I still will buy them though as TSC just moved to our smallish town, I feel compelled to only use TSC for things the feed mill doesn't carry. I am certainly glad TSC is here, but want to keep local business alive!
