My chickens try to dust all over their run but the ground is not very sandy. Would it work to make them a sand/gravel box for dusting... like a child's sandbox?

Absolutely! They would love that. You may wish to make more than one as they'll jockey for position if there's only one. Our entire run is covered in sand and they still find their favorite bathing spots elsewhere.

How do you keep your sand from being (eventually) covered by chicken poo? I skim the top goo off the hardpacked clay regularly but that wouldn't work with sand, would it?

My gals like to dust in the gravel driveway, right where DH parks. They don't make points for the mess. Another reason that they don't "free range" as freely as they used to.

I am adding a sand pit to my run too. My daughter wanted to know if I can put blue sand in there like she has in her own sandbox. Do they eat the sand? Will blue sand be ok for them?
