Dutch Bantams Breed Thread

I'm curious, if they are not Dutch, what are they? I don't really care if they have a little OEGB blood a ways back, as long as they are still sweet, little bantams, who lay decently for bantams (the two qualities that drew me to Dutch) and look similar to how their supposed to. It seems they must be minimally Dutch if they are selling them as that, or else it would be very dishonest marketing. I aware that most business do that to some degree (i.e. putting illustrations of their birds on the website instead of actual pictures), but it's hard to believe it would be as flagrant as selling completely non-Dutch bantams as Dutch. Is Privetts really that scummy?

It's not that hatcheries are scummy. It's that hatcheries consider birds that have other blood in them to be purebred, as long as they've been breeding them for long enough.

I had a long talk several years ago with the owner of Ideal about his "Dutch." He insisted that because he got them from a "breeder" that meant they were good Dutch. Well, knowing the breeder in question, not so much.

And he also admitted that they had infused the ones he got with OEGB blood, but felt that "after four generations they were then pure."

Again, no. No true breeder of Dutch will ever consider a bird that has a single drop of OEG blood in it to be pure. I leaned at the feet of Jean Roboker, the Grand Dame of Dutch, and I share her beliefs. No bird that has OEG in it is a true Dutch. Just not what we think.

Of course, if you wish to just own "backyard banties" then by all means get some "Dutch" from a hatchery. They're cute and if you're not going to breed or sell or show them, go for it. But bear in mind those that are serious about breeding Dutch will never consider them so.

Just not something we can accept.

Pathfinders, I have a question for you. I just bought some Dutch Bantams through ebay. How can I be sure it is a good breeder? Is there a database anywhere? I ordered from ClayLake and the guys name is David Crumrine.

The only "database" of reputable Dutch breeders would be the membership rolls of the Dutch Bantam Society (IMO.)

Anyone who is serious about breeding Dutch is a member. (Note, I have not had Dutch for three years now, and am no longer a member, although I was one for about 7 years or so.)

Could someone please post the color description of cream light Brown? I have a aba & apa standard but they were printed before the variety was excepted.

I am not sure that the ABA would want the Standard posted here without prior written permission.

The Standards are counted on to generate much needed revenue for these non-profit organizations and normally one is not allowed to post them.

Wyandottes7 did you obtain permission to post it here?

Sorry I didn't mean to upset anyone or get anyone in trouble by asking. I guess i figured sense there were standards posted on the fist page of this thread & doesn't violate any copyright laws because no one is selling it. It would be ok. I do own both standards just not the most current ones. Sorry again
