Hi all we have a group of 12 rhode island reds they are about 14 months old.
Found one in the yard that was not looking right at about 12 yesterday. Am typing this at about 6 today and this bird is dying. No motors skills just head dropping and not moving and not eating.......... everything i am seeing is about baby birds dying. All the other birds are acting perfectly normal. And this bird looks very heathy...... Any thoughts?? we are planning on putting her down to end her suffering.
Thanks

it sounds just like Botulisim you need to hurry and give epson salt with a syringe with a tube on it, so you can get the solution into its crop. mix a teaspoon to a cup of water.try to fill the crop, every 4 hours for one day second day run freash water with some copper sulfate in it,very slightly tieng the water blue.i hope this helps

No offense, but I seriously doubt that it's botulism.

Mabey she has an egg stuck! Try soaking her in warm water to help the egg move.
That happend to our chicken once.

Ok I have a question myself. We just had one of our chickens die this morning. She seemed perfectly fine yesterday. Was eating well etc. this morning found her laying head sideways dead. I do not see any signs of animals or anything getting her. She was unusually large, I believe she was a white Cochin as we got an assortment from Heritage of brown and white egg layers. She looked 3-4 times the other chickens size and although did not produce a lot of eggs was our mother hen. Any ideas on cause? We thought maybe heart attack or failure because so sudden and no prior symptoms. She was alive this morning

Welcome to BYC and sorry for your loss. It could be so many things... If you really want to know, send her off to the State lab for a necropsy or do one yourself. Many States, like CA, do them for free or a small fee and let you use their FedEx number.

If you decide to send her off, refrigerate, do not freeze!

We have already buried her as we considered her a pet. These are our first set of chickens so we want to make sure we are doing everything right. They did get a can of corn twice a day and have lettuces daily and oyster shell in bowl to side. Just wanted to make them happy chickens but read corn may not be so good, thoughts?
