Dying pullet :-(

After this current crisis is over it would be a good idea to do some research and find a way to cull that you can be comfortable with. I'm a big proponent of what is hard on us is usually best for them and think a quick strike of the ax is far more humane then many of the easy for us methods I've seen--putting them in the freezer, a box hooked up the car exhaust, etc.

I did see a thread on using dry ice the other day though that looked promising. The poster put the dry ice cube in the bottom of the box and placed a wire wrack over the top that she then coverd with straw to make a thick bed. The sick pullet was then taken off the roost and placed in the box (the whole room was kept dim so she'd stay sleepy) the lid of the box was sealed and when she checked 20 minutes later the pullet was gone. She said she stayed in the room the whole time and that there was never any struggling or clucking from the pullet. I don't know anything about how the chemical reaction with the dry ice works and will continue to use more direct methods myself, but it may be something for you to look into so you're better prepared next time.

Then you really should get rid of your animals and not expect someone else to do the dirty work for you. I don't enjoy it either...makes me sick to my stomach when I have to do it to.

and I agree with....WOW. I get animals as pets to love and cherish them, knowing full well that they could get sick or die before me and I never think for one moment that it is up to me to end their suffering, that's what vets are for.

I'm not referring to taking an animal to a vet to be put down. I have a problem with asking a friend to do the dirty work for you....like it's any easier or fun for them?

My friend has chickens and he offered to do this, I did not ask him...

He has no problem with it - otherwise I would take my girl to the vet to be euthanized.

I have very good friends, that's all I will say.

Hi, I'm sorry you're going thru this. It's a real sad thing when the deed has to be done whether by you or a vet or a friend that is okay with doing it. I'm sad too as my roo died this morning.
Chickens will toughen you up whether you like it or not. It was a terribly hard lesson for me to learn to put my feelings aside and do what's best for my pets.
