Dying pullet :-(

My heart goes out to you. I wouldn't have the strength to cull her myself either. Sorry for your loss but happy for her that she's in a better place.

So very sorry for your loss. I have great empathy. There is no one else to euthanize so I've had to learn to do it myself. Fortunately there haven't been that many, but I still bawl.

As a suggestion that makes it a little bit easier...

1. put the bird in a clear plastic tub. You can make a nice bed for her first and let her get used to being in it and comfortable.

2. put the lid on 1/2 of the box

3. wad up a paper towel and spray thoroughly with ether based starting fluid (get it at the automotive shop)

4. put it near her head

5. leave for a minute or two and then close the lid a bit more

6. spray the paper towel again if needed because it will evaporate fairly quickly

7. she will breathe in the ether and become unconcious, but will still be breathing; this is just like anesthetizing a person with ether

8. after she is unconcious, spray the paper towel again and completely close the lid on the box; you will need to wait several minutes but rest assured, she is totally asleep and not feeling anything. She should be overdosed on the ether within a few minutes and will die very peacefully

9. I always keep talking to them while they are breathing in the ether and they have always remained very calm. It's not totally unusual for there to be some autonomic muscle spasms at end of life, but this is not to be confused with pain. It can be upsetting and you may want to walk away after you know she is asleep.

This is the way I've euthanized the last 2 that I could not get well and continued to go downhill. I agree that I think they wish for death when they are in that kind of shape.

I hope you have wonderful memories of your beautiful girl and I do not agree that you are having someone else do your dirty work for you. Some folks can do it with no problem, some if they have to like me...and others like you that just cannot be part of it. You have nothing to be ashamed of...we're all different.

Hugs to you...

Thank you for this tip... I believe I could do this, if I had no choice (no-one to help me and no vet...)

I've bookmarked this page - again thank you for your kind words and for sharing this.

Hi everyone i am new here. I am so sorry for your chicken i know how you feel. I had some baby chicks that couldn't hold themselves up to eat or drink so my husband told me that i had to put them out of their misery. I didn't have the heart to and he made me do it and i cried i had one that i didn't put out of misery. cause on the stone it could stand right in the brooder it went flat on tummy so i fixed that problem i crumbled up the newspapers for them and it was able to get around.
