E. Coli Egg Yolk Peritonitis

I admire what you did for your Chook. Not many people out there know how special a chicken can be, I often explain to people that it is like having a dog as a pet, no difference.

I have my favourite chook (Mango) in a similar position to yours. I implanted her about 3 weeks ago and she hasn't show signs of improving. She is going in to the vet in a couple of days for an ultra sound, they suspect oviduct impaction. S he also going through a heavy molt. Fingers crossed its not worst case, I am already tossing up in my head whether I will go ahead with surgery if needed.
Oh I’m so sorry you’re going through this. Maybe she needs fluid drained and pain medication (Meloxicam) and antibiotics? Don’t give up! Let them do labs on her. My baby’s sister has a similar problem. She’s had 4 bouts of horrible crop stasis due to egg yolk sterile peritonitis. Last Wednesday 90ml of yolk was drained from her coelom. She improved with IM meloxicam, nystatin and bactrim. On Tuesday I’m taking her to a vet that places implants and see what he can offer her. She’s had 3 Lupron injections and has not responded. Doubt she has salpingitis as is not passing lash eggs but certainly continues to ovulate. I don’t want to subject her to surgery. I never knew hens go through all of this. It’s so unfair! Good luck with your baby. Let’s keep each other informed as to their progress.

I actually had an implant injected about 3 weeks ago and was doing well until about 7 days later when she began to molt a hard molt, fingers crossed it is the hard molt knocking her around, she is currently on meloxican but hasn't really picked up.

A nasty molt will make them feel horrible. Hopefully it’s only that. Keep me posted!

I have heard from other BYC members, and read in literature that once lash egg material is found in the abdomen and oviduct, antibiotics have little effect on curing it. I have lost a few hens to salpingitis, oviduct cancer, and ascites, and I now realize that you can only do the best you can for chickens. They do not always live a long life. I always now do a necropsy on the ones I lose to look for what might have contributed to their deaths. My chickens had infectious bronchitis virus at a young age, and that can cause many of the different reproductive disorders.

Hi , yes she did have the ultrasound, she didn't have an impacted oviduct which was good news, but they did find a small cluster of cysts attached to her intestines.
I asked the vet what this means in terms of her health and they basically told me there was nothing I could do, its just a matter of time until the cysts either get too big or become cancerous, the blood testbresults came back all good. She is doing well at the moment, eating and enjoying life, so I am going to enjoy her company until the time comes.

I rescued her to give her a good retirement and I have had her for a year this Easter and am dreading the day I will have to bite the bullet and do whats right by her.The vet has given he 6-8 months but she couldn't be confident, may be more or could be less.
When that day does come I will take heart in the fact that I spoiled her rotten for the small amount of time I had her. I will miss her dearly.
